Syracuse Notes
Ryan LaCasse and Damien Rhodes were named game captains for today’s contest. They joined 2005 team captains James Wyche and Steve Franklin for the opening coin toss.
Bruce Williams returned the opening kickoff for 23 yards. It was the first kickoff return of his career.
Arthur Kapalanga and Reggie McCoy each made their first career starts in the game. Kapalanga caught his first career pass in the fourth quarter.
Nick Chestnut’s 36-yard TD catch on SU’s first possession was the longest reception of his career. It was his third touchdown of the season.
Kellen Pruitt intercepted his fourth career pass to thwart a first-quarter Louisville drive. It was his first interception since the West Virginia game in 2003.
Thomas Whitfield recovered his third career fumble after a first-quarter SU punt hit off a Louisville player. It was his first fumble recovery since the Boston College game in 2004. It the SU defense’s eighth fumble recovery this season.
Paul Chiara made his second career catch in the first quarter. The 13-yard reception was the longest of his career. He also scored his first career touchdown with a career-best 21-yard scamper to pay dirt in the third quarter. For the game, Chiara finished with a career-high 38 rushing yards on eight carries.
The Orange matched its season-high with 10 points in the first quarter against Louisville. SU also scored 10 points in the first quarter at Pittsburgh.
Rice Moss caught a career-high six passes for a personal-best 116 yards.
Nick Chestnut tied his career high with two catches in the first half.
Steve Gregory forced his second career fumble in the second quarter. The ball was recovered by Anthony Smith, his third fumble recovery of the season.
Joe Kowalewski extended his consecutive games with a catch streak to 11 versus the Cardinals. He finished the game with one reception for seven yards.
James Wyche recorded seven tackles versus Louisville. He is now fifth on SU’s career tackles by down lineman list with 203. Two of Wyche’s tackles were sacks, giving him 30 career tackles for a loss. He is tied with Christian Ferrara for sixth on that career ledger.
Tony Jenkins established a new personal-best with two pass breakups versus Louisville.
Kelvin Smith intercepted his fourth career pass in the third quarter. It was SU’s second pick of the day. It marked the fifth time this season the Orange recorded multiple interceptions in a game.
Brendan Carney became the school’s single-season record holder for number of punts and yards. Carney had nine punts for 391 yards versus Louisville on Saturday. He punted 84 times for 3,491 yards this season.
Damien Rhodes rushed 10 times for 13 yards before leaving Saturday’s game with an injury. He finished his SU career ninth in rushing yards with 2,461. He is tied for third in career receptions by a running back (59) and ranks seventh at SU with 24 rushing touchdowns. He is fifth all-time with 3,972 all-purpose yards.
Kareem Jones returned a fourth quarter kick off 16 yards. He moved into fifth place in kickoff return yardage by a freshman with 398 yards.
Perry Patterson recorded career-highs in both passing yards (259) and attempts (39).
Lee Williams recorded a career-high three tackles, including one tackle for a loss.
