Syracuse vs. Cincinnati
Carrier Dome – Syracuse, NY
Forward Matt Gorman…
“Well, our defense was a lot better in the first half and then in the second half, offensively, we just weren’t getting things going. When we start off as bad as we did in the second half, it’s usually bad news for us. Our defense just wasn’t there.
Our defense was terrible; we gave up way too many points. Rebounding was terrible too tonight so we have a lot of things to work on before Louisville. But our offense, when it gets going and we’re executing plays like that in the first half, nobody can beat us.”
Center Darryl Watkins…
On the miscommunication on a play late in the 2nd half:
“It was like we were looking for the refs to make a call because we thought it was a shot-clock violation. We thought that he didn’t get the ball off in time so we were waiting for the refs to make a call, but they didn’t and Cincinnati ended up getting the ball back.”
On the season series with Cincinnati:
“It’s the Big East, and this can happen to anybody. You can end up getting a win at somebody else’s court and they come back with revenge on their mind and they come at you from the start. We haven’t been a real tough team at home. We have three losses this season here in the Big East.”
Guard Gerry McNamara…
“We’ve got to rebound just like we have all year. You lose a game, you have to try to win the next one. It’s simple. You go back to work and be hungry for the next one, and that’s what it’s all about.
I wouldn’t say that we’re not giving our 100% effort. There are breakdowns on defense and when you break down and give them open shots, they are going to make them. We gave them a lot of open looks in the 2-3 zone and when we went to the man-to-man we played good for a little while. But in the second half we let down again. You have to want to win the game, and you have to be smart doing it.
I don’t want to end my senior year going to a different tournament, I want to go to the NCAA tournament, and that’s on us. The coaches can only do so much, and the rest is up to us. Right now, we’re struggling but you just have to keep working, keep going at it, and keep getting in the gym to work. We need every win we can get and we’re going to try to get them. We’ve done it before, beating a few really good teams right in a row and that’s what we’re going to have to do.”
