Steve Kroft was active in various campus organizations including The Daily Orange and WAER Radio. He chaired the Campus Community Chest and was campaign chairman of the Campus Alliance Party.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, Steve served in the United States Army as a correspondent and photographer. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster) Army Commendation Medal and Joint Service Commendation Medal.
Steve began his professional career in 1971 as a reporter with WSYR Radio and Television in Syracuse. He worked in local news at WPLG-TV in Miami and WJXT-TV in Jacksonville before joining CBS in 1980.
Since May 1989 Steve has been co-editor and correspondent of the CBS-TV award winning newsmagazine 60 Minutes. Prior to joining 60 Minutes, he was principal correspondent with the CBS newsmagazine West 57th from 1986 to 1989. Before that assignment, Steve was a London based correspondent for the CBS Evening News program.
As a CBS correspondent, Steve has traveled to more than 30 countries on assignments that have included unrest in South Africa, the War in El Salvador, Violence in Northern Ireland, Fighting in Beirut, the U.S. invasion of Grenada, the TWA hostage crisis, various terrorist bombing in Europe, the assassination of Indira Ghandi and various presidential trips and summits.
Steve has been honored with three national Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He has also received two Sigman Delta Chi Green Eye Shade awards and an Ohio State award.
A steady and generous contributor to Syracuse University, Steve belongs to the Society of Fellows and the Varsity Club of SU. He was to appear on the grogram for the University’s 125th anniversary celebration gala but was called away on assignment to Bosnia.
