Charlie Lockwood was a four-time All-American midfielder for the Orange. The captain is ranked 21st on SU’s career goals list with 97. He scored 35 points his freshman year, ranking him 14th all-time on the first-year players’ points list. He scored at least one point 50 times in his SU career and had 35 multiple-point games. In his 11 NCAA playoff game appearances, he scored 13 goals and 16 assists.
Lockwood played for the USA in the World Games in 1994 and 1998. In 1994, he was one of only two collegiate athletes to make the team.
Senior Year (1994): One of three captains … second-team All-American … second leading scorer with 51 points … also second on team in assists (19) and tied for second-leading goal scorer (32) … recovered 54 ground balls … scored three or more goals in six games … scored four games in first five games … had a career high seven points in two games (4-3) vs. Yale and Towson … played for the North in the North/South Collegiate All-Star Game.
Junior Year (1993): Second-team All-American … second highest NCAA tournament scorer with 11 (4-7) points … had an assist against North Carolina with a pinpoint pass to Matt Riter for the game-winning goal with eight seconds left to win the National Championship … that assist was the 101st point of his career … then career highs with five assists and six (1-5) points against Hofstra in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament … third leading scorer with 34 points … finished fifth on goals (20) and third in assists (14) … led SU in assists in four games … earned a roster spot as a walk-on for the 1993-94 SU basketball team, first player since Jim Brown to play both sports.
Sophomore Year (1992): First-team All-American … finished third on the team in goals and fourth in points (23-9-32), despite suffering from a hip pointer that kept him out of the Loyola game and limited his mobility for two weeks … scored four goals against UMass … scored six goals in the NCAA playoffs and had a four-point game (3-1) vs. Yale in the NCAA quarterfinals … had three goals or more in a game five times and had nine multi-point games on the season … picked up 46 ground balls.
Freshman Year (1991): Third-team All-American … 22 goals were fourth best on the team and ranked among the top 10 goal totals for an Orange frosh … fourth-leading scorer on the team with 35 points (22-13) … set career highs with four goals and five points vs. Adelphi … had three three-goal games (Johns Hopkins, Hofstra, Penn) … scored at least one point in 12 of SU’s 15 contests, with nine multiple-point games … recorded seven points in the NCAA playoffs (1-6).
High School: MVP for West Genesee’s 1990 state championship team… All-American, All-League for Coach Mike Messere … 1990 Empire State Games gold medalist … also lettered four years on the basketball team.
