Syracuse vs. Akron
October 24, 2009
Carrier Dome – Syracuse, N.Y.
Andre Jones became just the second player in the nation to start three positions. At Syracuse, he started at wide receiver. He has also started three games at safety this season and one at corner. Oklahoma’s Body Eldriidge has also started at three positions this season (center, guard and tight end).
Jones is now just the fourth player in the nation to start on both sides of the ball. Vanderbilt’s Jamie Graham and Cincinnati’s Marcus Barnett each have started at least one game at both wide receiver and corner back, while San Jose State lineman Steve Lightsy has started games at offensive guard and defensive tackle.
Andre Jones, who caught seven TDs last season – including two at Syracuse – caught his first TD of the season after playing defense the first five games of 2009.
Due to an injury to corner Manley Waller last week, Jones was also forced to play defense for the Zips at Syracuse. Jones also took snaps at quarterback at Syracuse in a “wildcat” formation.
True freshman Patrick Nicely, making his second career start, threw his first career TD, an 11-yarder to Andre Jones.
Dashan Miller’s 98—yard kickoff return was the first for the Zips since Bryan Williams’ 95-yarder on Nov. 7, 2007 versus Ohio. Miller set a UA record for kickoff return yards. He had 4 for 191 with the previous record being 180 (on eight returns) by Matt Cherry on 2001 versus Marshall.
Zach Campbell boomed a 76-yard punt in the third quarter, marking the third-longest in school history behind Jim Heyworth (81 yards vs. Northern Michigan in 1974) and Frank Zazula (77 yards vs Toledo in 1937).
Third-year sophomore Curtis Borwn caught his first career pass, a three-yarder in the fourth quarter at Syracuse.
