Syracuse vs. Virginia
February 27, 2009
Carrier Dome/Syracuse, N.Y.
Liz Hogan, Sophomore, Goalkeeper
On Virginia scoring after having possession for the first four minutes of the second half:
“I would not say it was demoralizing. It was a little frustrating. At the same time, we played good defense for four minutes, so you can take a positive note out of that goal.”
On her 11 saves in the first half:
“I saw the ball well, but I also think I got lucky a few times. My defense knocked down a few balls for me, so it was all momentum.”
On constantly being shot on in the second half:
“I would not say I was nervous. It is easy to lose your focus, but I think our defense did a good job of trying to say positive after every goal, but it was frustrating.”
Christina Dove, Junior, Midfield
On being outscored in the second half:
“It is definitely hard when you do not have the ball. We kept turning the ball over and they would hold the ball for awhile. It definitely made it hard to score and messed up our flow on offense and the midfield in general.”
On what the team can take from the game:
“We definitely need to show everyone that we can work harder. Yes, we were ranked higher than them [UVA], but that did not mean anything in the game. It is definitely motivation to come out and work harder. Luckily, it is early in the season and we still have time to improve on things, from hustle to ground balls to shooting --everything. It is definitely good that this happened to us now.”
Katie Rowan, Senior, Attack
On not being able to beat Virginia during her tenure at SU:
“It is definitely something the seniors were thinking about going into the game, that we have never beaten Virginia. We play them early in the year, and we just did not come today and play our game. We were not getting draw controls or as much possession on offense as we wanted.”
On SU’s play in the second half:
“I think the second half we could have come out more focused and ready to go, including going after all the loose balls. I think a lot of it was just possession, we did not have the ball as much as we usually do.”
