Postgame Quotes
Syracuse vs. Cornell
Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Carrier Dome/Syracuse, N.Y.
Coach John Desko
Opening Statement:
“After losing on Saturday to Princeton, it was nice to have a short week to get back out and play again, especially in the comfort of the Carrier Dome. The guys got through practice on Sunday and did better on Monday, and they came out pretty focused with little time to prepare. We knew that Cornell would never quit. They have a great way of creating chaos and some unsettled situations. Their poles scored two goals early which really caught us by surprise to help them compete early in the game. We started to pull away at the end of the second quarter. Then they scored another goal or two. At halftime we were up three and then after the third quarter we were up four. All of sudden we look up at the board again and they’re within a couple and it’s a dog fight again. We did a pretty good job of competing and getting goals when we needed them. Then we remained patient at the end to try to seal the deal. For the most part, it was pretty up and down. Both teams made some mistakes, but for us to come out with the win after losing on Saturday is certainly good for our souls.”

On the slowed pace of the offense:
“The guys looked like they really wanted to play quickly. We were playing with a fair amount of emotion tonight. I thought we were a little bit sloppy with our execution on offense. We wanted to get the ball around the net a couple of times just to get some movement and a feel for what they were doing defensively, and then go to the goal. We did a pretty good job of that tonight. We got some good looks.”

On facing ex-Orange goaltender Jake Myers:
“We thought he might play because he came in at the end of the Harvard game. I’m sure he’s probably the most comfortable here in the Carrier Dome, having practiced and played here before. We certainly thought that was a good possibility and we were prepared for either one. We shot pretty well, especially early in the game. It helped our cause that it was 8-5 at halftime, so I thought we did a pretty good job with that. We thought there was a good chance that we’d see him.”

On facing Myers:
“We haven’t really gone against Jake on a regular basis in quite a while. We have a lot of respect for him and we know that he’s a great goalie. We wanted to come out, especially after the Princeton game, and put good shots on net. No matter who was in net, we wanted to get quality shots. I’m really proud of our offense for stepping it up after the Princeton game.”

On Joel White’s play against Cornell midfielder Max Seibald:
“He played really well. Max is a great midfielder, and I have a lot of respect for him and his style of play. We wanted to keep him on the field as much as we could, whether he got stuck on defense behind the net or we would run him around a little bit and make Joel’s job a little bit easier. The key to guarding him is to play solid defense and communicate well.”

On the importance of the win:
“It really means a lot to come out and get a big win against Cornell, one of our rivals and a team that plays us hard every year. We have to come out hard every game. We had a little letdown against Princeton, so we have to come out against Rutgers and really stay focused. We can’t look over anyone for the rest of the season.”

On defending Seibald and the play of the defense:
“He’s one of the best midfielders in the country. It’s a real challenge going out there against him, but at the same time I know that I have a great defense behind me. We had some great guys sliding; a lot of good talk and John [Galloway] made great saves. I think we did well. We had some breakdowns here and there, but overall we played a lot better than we did last week. The way we were clearing the ball and getting the ball to our offense, it’s tough to beat us.”
