Syracuse Postgame Notes
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
Syracuse at #7/5 Penn State
Saturday, September 12, 2009
State College, Pa./Beaver Stadium
• Linebacker E.J. Carter made his first career start at weakside linebacker in place of the injured Ryan Gillum. Offensively, tight end Cody Catalina and wide receiver Alec Lemon also received their first career starting nods in the contest.
• Safety Mike Holmes recovered the fifth fumble of his career on the opening play of the second quarter after Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark dropped the snap on a 4th-and-1 from the Syracuse one-yard line. Holmes’ five career fumble recoveries is the most of any active SU player.
• Quarterback Ryan Nassib’s first career pass attempt was a 19-yard completion to Catalina in the second quarter. The play also marked Catalina’s first career reception.
• Cornerback Kevyn Scott’s second-quarter interception was the first of his career.
• Wide receiver Mike Williams caught five passes for 54 yards Saturday. He has a reception in 22 straight games, the fourth-longest streak in team history, breaking a tie with Marvin Harrison (21). Williams has 96 career catches, which ranks ninth on the SU all-time list. However, Williams’ consecutive games with a touchdown streak came to an end at 10. It had been the longest such streak in the FBS.
• Defensive tackle Andrew Lewis registered the first half sack of his career late in the fourth quarter.
• Defensive end Mikhail Marinovich forced and recovered the first fumble of his career late in the fourth quarter to set up SU’s only touchdown of the game.
• Saturday’s crowd of 106,387 was the third gathering of 100,000 or more to witness an Orange football game and the largest crowd since 107,725 gathered at Neyland Stadium for Syracuse at Tennessee on Sept. 1, 2001. The only other crowd of 100,000-plus in team history saw Syracuse defeat Michigan, 38-28, at the “Big House” on Sept. 12, 1998. Attendance for that game was 111,012.
