Head Coach Doug Marrone Press Conference Transcript (Nov. 11, 2011)
Syracuse vs. USF
November 11, 2011
Syracuse, N.Y.
Carrier Dome
Opening statement:
“Obviously, we have lost our third straight. We were beat on all three phases. At the end of the day, it starts with me. I have to do a much, much better job coaching this team, put them in a position to make plays, have the ability to win a game, whether it is at the end of the game or early on, and to keep playing well. The bye week obviously comes at a good time. We need as much practice as we can get. We will get the extra practices, move forward, and finish the season out the right way. I just have to do a better job of running this football team in all three phases.”
On if drops were an issue in practice this week:
“No, we chart drops every single day in practice. We have to do a good job of creating those atmospheres where players can catch those balls in the game. I have to do a better job of creating those atmospheres, maybe tighter windows and things like that. I have to do a better job of that in practice for the players.”
On if senior wide receiver Van Chew was injured in the game:
“Yes, he got hurt today. He was banged up.”
On if he was disappointed with the play of the offensive line:
“No, I am disappointed in myself. I have to do a much better job in getting everyone ready to play. It starts with me and I am around all of the positions. I have to do a better job of getting everybody ready.”
On what he plans to do to do a better job:
“I have to put them in the position where they have the ability and confidence to make plays. It is my job.”
On whether it is his job when there are dropped passes and missed blocks:
“Absolutely, it is definitely my job. I do not know how anyone sees it any other way. I could create atmospheres for those players where they are in tight windows, make tough catches, move in the pocket, doing different types of drills. I have to get them better at that because if not we just sit here and what do we do? You have to have answers for it and the answers start with me. I have to do a better job. It is my fault.”
On why the team has lost three games in a row:
“It starts with me. I have to do a better job. I am not getting this team to play at high enough level for us to be consistent and win football games. Again, from A to Z, I have to a better job.”
On if USF surprised him with their game plan:
“No, they did not. We knew that we had to stop (quarterback) B.J. Daniels. Obviously, he played well tonight. We knew that we had to keep the ball on offense and score. We were not able to do that.”
On how much penalties were a factor:
“I would like to think that I run a program that has a lot of structure and discipline that carries over to the field. With those penalties, I have to do a better job. It is not like it happens in practice. We have officials in practice all the time. Like anything, you have to put forth that effort when the ball is snapped. When the whistle blows, we do not need that effort that puts us in that situation where we lose valuable yards.”
On how practice went well, but the game did not:
“No, it did not. The kids practiced hard, they do a good job. I have to make sure I am putting the right scheme in and putting the players in the best position. We have to look at: they practiced hard, but the environment of practice and what it is. This way when they get on the field it is as close to that as possible. The problem for us right now is we are not executing on the field.”
On establishing the run:
“I think every game except for one this year we have tried to establish the run early. We try to do that so it sets up our play-action pass and can set up our bootlegs. When you get down by two scores, you have to think about what you want to do in the course of that game. I have to do a better job of putting us in the right scheme, giving us better angles, being able to finish some things, and getting some better runs and then we can get the ball down deep off play-action passes and score more points.”
On how frustrating it was when senior quarterback Ryan Nassib did not have the time to pass the ball:
“I think about myself. I have to get them in situations in practice where we can make those plays because we do make them during the week of practice. We have to make them on Saturdays. I have to figure out a way to get that done. It is my responsibility.”
On why he decided to go for it on fourth down twice late in the game:
“Time”
On if there is a difference to managing the team morale after a loss, opposed to a win, going into the bye week:
“Of course, it is always much better to go into a bye week with a win. That is the one thing you strive to do, you strive to win each game. Again, it is going back to work and the extra practices. That is what we need right now. We need as much practice as we can possibly have.”
On if sophomore kicker Ross Krautman is injured:
“Yes, we said that during the week.”
On if the team has gotten away from the goal of competing for a BIG EAST title:
“I definitely feel that we are not succeeding in those goals and I feel that it is my fault.”
