Rhode Island Coaches Quotes
Syracuse vs. Rhode Island
September 10, 2011
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY
Rhode Island head coach Joe Trainer
On his quarterback and the overall feelings of the game:
“He’s got tremendous poise, he’s a good player and I am not going to stroke him for doing what we anticipate him doing every week. We’re going to go as far as he allows us to go and he showed great poise and that’s just the expectation we have for him every week, he’s just a great competitor. He took a lot of shots today and I am sure he is going to be sore tomorrow, but we played hard and I told the team after the game that I was proud of the effort. We just didn’t play clean, but we felt coming into the fourth quarter that we had a shot to win the game. Like most BCS teams they try to knock you out at the beginning and if they don’t then you have a shot going into the second half and I think we did that, but I still don’t have an answer for that sideline play on the quarterback. Just from my vantage point it was something that was little too rough.”
On the last two possessions, especially the two plays where they we able to get to quarterback:
“They blitzed on both possessions and we did a pretty good job picking it up. It looked to me like they put the ball up the middle a little bit and I have not seen film yet, but it looked to me like we kept expecting the blitz to come from the outside and we kind of cut inside and were not able to recover.
On the quarterback taking blame:
“I think that with a senior quarterback he’s going to take the blame of everything whether or not it was his fault, but that’s just the kind of warrior he is, he’s not going to shy away from taking the responsibility.”
On URI’s self-confidence building as the game went along:
“We play a pretty competitive schedule, and this environment was a little different than what we are used to. We’re going to have to play better than we did today if we’re going to beat UMASS and the teams to follow, so we have got to continue to grow and learn from our mistakes.”
