Dr. John Echeandia Font (Lacrosse)

A two-time lacrosse All-American, John Echeandia Font graduated in 1953. During his senior season, Font was named team captain and was awarded the Laurie Cox Trophy for being the Most Valuable Player.
Font earned his bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology in 1953 and his master's in the same field in 1955. In November of 1954, Font entered the military and in January of 1955, he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was honorably discharged in January of 1958. After completing his military requirements, Font was admitted to the PhD program at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his degree in the summer of 1960. Font was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
In the Fall of 1960, Font returned to SU as an assistant professor of speech pathology and audiology. He was also named director of clinical practicum for undergraduate and graduate majors in speech pathology. In 1963, Font left Syracuse to become assistant professor and director of the student-training clinic at Stanford University. After three years at Stanford, Font opened his own private practice in speech therapy in San Jose, Calif. He returned to Stanford in 1970 and for five years, served as a clinical assistant professor of speech pathology. He founded and has been the director of the Beacon School since 1970, a school specializing in the educational, emotional, and behavioral management of junior high and high school age students with severe emotional, behavior and learning problems.
In 1998, the John Echeandia Font Lacrosse Scholarship, which helps support a lacrosse player who is in need of financial assistance, was established. Font recently became a member of the Society of Fellows, Chancellor's Council, The Founders Fund, Athletic Advisory Board and the Varsity Club.
