Brandon Triche, Senior, Guard
You seemed like you tried to get to the basket a lot more tonight than against Pace, is there anything behind that?
“In general, in the last three years a lot of my shots have been jump shots and I haven’t been as aggressive— when I am actually better at going to the basket than shooting jump shots. Tonight I tried to get to the basket a little bit more and let that open up my three-point shot.”
You’ve been playing off the ball and on the ball. Right now, what’s more comfortable for you early in the season—playing on the ball or playing the point guard?
“Playing on the ball and mixing it up as well. I know me and Michael (Carter-Williams) are going to be playing a lot of minutes so one of us has to be the release. Playing point guard all of the time—I’ve just seen Scoop (Jardine) do it and you just get too tired too quick. You’ve got guys pressuring you so I think one thing for us is we have two guys again on the ball. That makes us a much better team.”
When you’re playing at the top of the zone with guys like (James) Southerland and C.J. Fair, someone who is not as experienced playing that position, do you have to do anything different on your end?
“Just talk a little more to them and tell them to get to different spots. I know the coaches are going to do that but just as one of the leaders and from playing the zone for so long— being able to tell them the good things they’re doing and then the different things they need to get better, that’s what I have to do. But it starts with energy. As long as their energy is high—them being 6-8 with long arms – they’re going to make up for their mistakes.”
Trevor Cooney, Freshman, Guard
Is your stamina better than you thought or about where you thought you would be?
“It was better than I thought it was. I’ve only put it together with two days of practice before this. I look forward to this week of practice before Friday.”
What do you think you bring to this team now that you’re back?
“I thought I played pretty well. I just want to be a spark off of the bench—just come in, play hard and do whatever the team needs me to do.”
How long do you think it’s going to be before you’re back 100 percent?
“I think this week will be a good week for me and then, after San Diego, we have another nine days off so I think by then I’ll be back to normal.”
Talk about how much you guys are looking forward to your next game with a ranked opponent.
“We’re really excited for that game. San Diego State is a great team and we’re looking forward to playing them. To play them out on a boat in San Diego—we’re really looking forward to it.”
How tough physically do you think it will be to go from the two exhibition games to a ranked opponent?
“It’s going to be really tough. The two teams that we’ve played are pretty good teams but they’re not a San Diego State. So to come out and play them on our first game, it’s going to be tough but it’s going to be a good battle for us.”
C.J. Fair, Junior, Forward
How have you been able to make the transition from being more of a sixth man to the starting line-up this year?
“I played starting minutes last year so it’s not that much different but there is a difference hearing your name being called and starting the tempo of the game. That’s something I am getting used to knowing this year. There’s a new team and I am one of the leaders on the team.”
With all of the turnover in the line-up through two exhibition games how do you feel about the offensive chemistry compared to how you would expect it to be?
“I think this is where I expected it to be. It gets sloppy at times but we have good spurts at times. That’s what happens the first couple times on the court when we’re playing against new opponents. We’re going to have some sloppy moments but I know throughout the season it’s going to be much better.”
How excited are you to have these exhibition games come to an end and start to play a game that counts in San Diego?
“I’m excited. Especially starting the season off playing against San Diego State, out there and on a boat—not too many people can experience that and that’s something we’re looking forward to.”
