Student-Athlete Quotes
Carrier Dome – Syracuse, N.Y.
Brandon Triche, Senior, Guard
What was going on in the first half that was holding you guys up?
Their team was getting into the lane whenever they wanted to. We had a tough time getting out to their shooters. Once we figured them out, we adapted better in the second half and were able to get stops and that ultimately helped our offense.
Canisius is a good three-point shooting team, what did you do to go up against that?
We were able to close out better in the second half, unlike the first, and our wings played a little bit better too because a lot of times they would bring guys to the corners and we were able to bump the wings down, as a whole I think me and Michael (Carter-Williams) did a lot better. We gave up the middle more, but it helped on our end.
You are one win away for 900 for Boeheim, your thoughts on that?
It is going to be an incredible experience. I've seen the last 300, being here. I think it was Jonny Flynn's freshman year he got 700, and now I am seeing 900 and I am happy to be a part of it. He deserves every win he gets.
Michael Carter-Williams, Sophomore, Guard
What did coach say to you at half about distributing the ball?
Coach said I needed to be more in attack mode – either finish a layup or not distribute it too much. He told me to pick it up and find my open teammates.
What was going on in the first half? Finals week preparation?
Finals could've been it, but we also haven't played in a while. It took us a little bit to get going and once we got going in the second half, we didn't want to look back.
Did you look at stat sheet at half time and notice you had 1 assist and said 'I need to get to my average and dish it out more?'
No, I think it was the fact I needed to be more aggressive. I am not getting my teammates open shots so I am not doing my part. I am not trying to think about numbers during the game, I am just trying to do my part and that is to lead the team and get my teammates open shots. We did a better job of that in the second half.
James Southerland, Senior, Forward
What was the difference between the first and second halves?
The difference was we focused a lot more on defense. We had to get out and pressure their shooters. Our offense got a lot better too.
Was it luck hitting all those mid-range shots or was it that you found your stroke?
The guys were over-playing me, especially on threes and the mid-range was wide open, so I took advantage of them playing tight on me and got better shots.
You and Brandon (Triche) have been here for four years, tell me how he has grown and matured over those four years?
He definitely has grown and matured since the first day I met him. He was a guy that really didn't talk to anybody, and turned into a guy that is outgoing and brings a lot of chemistry to the team and he's been my roommate since freshman year. He does stick to himself still, but he is one of the leaders on the team that everybody looks up to.
