Coach Boeheim Quotes
Carrier Dome – Syracuse, NY
Opening statement:
“I thought this was a great game for us. First off, I thought all along that Detroit was a very, very good team. I think we really executed well on offense. We had great shots, our defense was really good and when we play like that, we are a tremendous team.
Probably within the last seven minutes they picked it up a little bit, they got looser on offense and they started to get going. They hesitated for about 32 minutes and then they started to go and we weren’t prepared. At that point, we thought we had control of the game and it is a good lesson to learn, because you never have control of the game. We had four or five really bad turnovers, we committed two fouls and when we had the lead, they were trying to go for the ball and we hadn’t been in that kind of game situation. I think both guys didn’t even think that they were wrong. You don’t foul in end-of-game situations and you learn from that.”
“I think hopefully we learned a lesson at the end. We rebounded pretty well, except for the end of the game when we didn’t. We contested their three-point shooters, they were 0-14. The last four shots we never got anybody at all on the three-point shooters and they made three of them. I think the one certainly good thing that comes out of it is that Michael (Carter-Williams) had to go to the line. If he misses a couple of those, it’s anybody’s game. He knocked them down and that was the difference.”
“I watched Detroit at Pittsburgh, they were up at halftime, they should’ve beaten St. John’s and they are a pretty good team, a veteran team. I was shocked that we played the way we played as well as we played and had such good control of the game and we haven’t been in a situation lately when it was a 10-point game with three minutes to go and we had two very, very good guards.
They made two very bad turnovers and that led to four points. That shouldn’t happen, we should take care of the ball in that situation and we didn’t. Hopefully we learn from that because we are going to be in a lot of games where we’d be happy to have a six- or eight- point lead late in the game. I think mentally, we didn’t adjust to that change. Brandon (Triche), who we needed in the end of the game, committed two fouls and at the end of the game and he wasn’t in there. We need him to step up and play better.”
“This was the first game Michael (Carter-Williams) was challenged. McCallum really challenged him. He still made great plays and great decisions, but he made probably two or three turnovers where he was up in the air and didn’t have a place to go.”
“These are things that usually you don’t learn from games that you win, but usually players almost need to lose a game to really think about things such as ‘this is what we have to do’ and I think this game feels more like a loss. It’s good to get one that feels like it but isn’t and I think we’ll be able to look at some plays.
We haven’t looked at a lot of tape because there really hasn’t been anything to look at. We can look at some bad fouls, we can look at where we left their high-post shooter wide open, didn’t contest him, which we did the whole game, and then didn’t do. We can learn from a couple of the bad turnovers we had, and I think there are a lot of things to learn from. These are all things we can learn from and make a little difference.”
“The week of exams is always tough to come off of and we have a week to get ourselves back and get to New York. We know Temple is a tremendous team and it’ll be a tremendous game in New York. We have a few days to prepare for that and go from here.”
Coach can you say what it meant to have Dave Bing here tonight?
“Well that was the only thing that made me nervous. When I went into the locker room he was sitting there. It was the first time I’ve been nervous in a long time. It was good to have him here. I had a chance to talk to him before the game for awhile and I talked to somebody who’s got more problems then I have. Syracuse basketball is what it is because of Dave Bing.”
How did you guys prepare to face a guy like Ray McCallum?
“We did a good job in our zone. He is much more effective when you play man-to-man against him. Tonight I thought he was very patient, he moved the ball and he got the ball to their shooters. They have a very good team. I know they were 0-14 (from the three-point line) and I think if we played this game again and we missed a couple shots in the first half, and they made a couple it would be an eight point game, that’s probably what it should have been.
Maybe we’ll keep our focus better in the second half and not be careless with the basketball. We’ve been pressured a little bit this year, especially at Arkansas. Obviously San Diego State is a tremendous defensive team, they pressure you and we haven’t turned it over like we did tonight. We aren’t going to be real good if we are going to turn it over that many times, particularly in lat- game situations.”
What were you thinking when you were watching the video montage and you saw Coach K, and Rick Pitino?
I am proud to be here, this game was more pressure then I’ve felt in a long time. I certainly wasn’t thinking about losing until a little bit there at the end, that wouldn’t have been a good thing to have happen. We’ve had so many great players here and we’ve had so much help and the fans have been really, really great for a long time.
You win these games with support and players. If you coach a long time, you’re going to win a lot of games, it is a simple as that. I am in a good place and I’ve always felt I was. The support of the fans cannot be overestimated because you have to have that kind of support in your building when you bring recruits into help you play better. We’ve had a tremendous and loyal fan base that comes out when it is not that easy to get here to the Carrier Dome. That is why I thought this was always a great place to coach and why I never thought about going somewhere else. The support of the fans is the number one thing that you have got to have.
