Student-Athlete Quotes
Syracuse, N.Y. – Carrier Dome
Brandon Triche, Senior, Guard
Talk about coach’s (Boeheim) 900th win.
“It’s an incredible accomplishment. Only three people have done that so far. Being so consistent over the years pretty much shows everyone what type of coach he is. He’s a great coach and he deserved it.”
Having grown up here and your uncle (Howard Triche) having played here, you probably, more than any other guy in this locker room, appreciate this. Right?
“Well, I didn’t watch a lot of Syracuse basketball growing up until about seventh grade, so I started watching at 600. I guess I can say I was a part of the last 300.”
What were your impressions of the end of the game and the run that Detroit went on.
“Just a little bit of a breakdown on our part. I think we started to slow the game down a little bit and we started taking jump shots. We wanted to get to the basket. We knew they were going to foul us, but we took jump shots and we will definitely learn from a situation like that. It’s a great game to have.”
Michael Carter-Williams, Sophomore, Guard
In a close game, you’re right there at the end with the ball in your hand at the free throw line. Take us through that situation.
“I focused on making the free throws, just like we do everyday in practice. We practice free throws every day and I want to go to the line and knock them down. I know we needed them and the team needed me at that moment. So, I just knocked down free throws.”
How nice is it when you have a guy like James Southerland that you can just flip the ball to and you know it’s going in every time he puts it up?
“It’s great. James (Southerland) is a great player. He had some big shots for us. He’s a great asset to this team and we’re going to need him.”
James Southerland, Senior, Forward
What does 900 wins mean to you?
“It feels great to be a part of it, his 800th and 900th win, which makes it my 100th win, so I feel great.”
Can you appreciate what Coach Boeheim's been able to accomplish and the fact that you’ve had the chance to play for him for four years?
“Definitely, and I will appreciate it more when we get three more wins to make it 903.”
Are you relieved that the team got past 900?
“No, we still have to go out there and win more games. We have a long season ahead and our goal is to get a national championship.”
Take through the last couple of minutes when you’re in a tight spot?
“Having a young team, we haven’t been in a situation like that before. Detroit hadn’t got it going all game and in the last five or six minutes they finally pushed the ball and the game got closer than we expected. We did a good job pulling through, especially Mike (Carter-Williams). He did a good job of hitting his free throws. We’ve got to be prepared for these kinds of games because when we play in the Big East, no team is going to give up.”
Going into Saturday’s game you were really struggling, but the last two games you seem to be back on track. Is there any noticeable difference from you?
“Knowing that my team depends on me, especially in tight games like this where no one can get it going offensively helps. I was lucky in the other games we played where our team was able to blow them out by 20. Games like this are going to be tough and we’re going to need some scoring.”
Dave Bing ’66, Former Syracuse Basketball player, Mayor of Detroit
Did Jim (Boeheim) ask you to come tonight or did you have it circled on your calendar?
“Circled on my calendar. I wanted to be here. I didn’t want him to know I was coming. I just wanted to be here with him.”
On any regular day how much does the Syracuse basketball phenomenon pop into your head?
“It’s never too far away. Not only were Jim (Boeheim) and I great friends, but the whole team that came in together as freshmen – all of us are still very friendly with each other. We do communicate and do see each other, but there’s not too many days that will go by that Syracuse doesn’t pop in my mind.
