Coach Boeheim Quotes
Syracuse, N.Y. – Carrier Dome
Opening Statement:
“I think in the beginning what we have seen is that we haven’t shot the ball well from the perimeter and they gave us some open looks. Trevor (Cooney), Michael (Carter-Williams) and Brandon (Triche) made some in the first part of the game – that kind of broke the game open, and it kind of stayed that way. I thought we did a pretty good job defensively. For the most part, our pressure was good. We forced some turnovers. Offensively, I thought we did a pretty good job. Second half, we missed some open shots and got the ball knocked away inside a few times, but overall I thought we did a good job.”
Did you like the way C.J. (Fair) went after the ball at the backboard today?
“C.J. (Fair) was really good. I should have started with that. He was the best he’s played all year. He was on the board aggressively, and I thought he did a really good job. I thought Rakeem (Christmas) had a good stretch in there. I thought DaJaun (Coleman) rebounded the ball well and Michael (Carter-Williams) was getting his numbers, getting the ball to people, finding people. That’s what he does.”
During one timeout you seemed to spend some time explaining something to Rakem. What were you telling him?
“He just did not make two plays on the defense that I thought he could have made. He didn’t react well. Then he got in good position. I think Michael (Carter Williams) got him a couple and he got going a little bit, but he’s got to be more of a factor on defense. The first two plays of the game, he was in a position where he could have made a defensive play and didn’t. We need him to make those plays down there. Those guys are learning, and it’s a process. They’re not there.”
Trevor (Cooney) has made some plays now in the last two games. Is he rounding into getting past that tonsillectomy?
“Yea I don’t know how much that held him back. That’s a good question. I don’t know if that really had anything to do with it. I just think that it takes a while for shooters to get comfortable. When you miss a couple, you start thinking about it too much. He’ll be fine. He gets shots. He’ll make some, Brandon (Triche) will make some, Michael (Carter-Williams) will make some. They just got off to a slow start, but it’s early. They’ll get going.”
Talk about Jerami (Grant). Is he earning some time with all the positive things he’s doing?
“He’s doing some good things. He’s in a tough position, because James (Southerland) and C.J. (Fair) are veteran guys, and they’re going to be out there most of the time in crunch situations. He has certainly proven that he can bring something to the table. It’s great for him getting this kind of experience. This will help him not only this year, but this will help him going forward.”
