Opening Statement:
“We understood what we did poorly against Cornell. We came out and we guarded their shooters. They got some penetration but not a lot, and when they did they missed it. The second half we really felt we were in control of the game and our guards just did not play the same type of defense. There is a lesson learned here just as in the first half of Cornell: if you don’t guard people, every team that we play has guys that can shoot. I think Branden Frazier and Jon Severe are two very, very good guards and can play. They are as good as anybody that we’re going to see this year and they are very good offensive players.
“They’re (referees) going to call fouls but we need to be able to play without fouling. The foul trouble is when we stopped guarding and you just can’t do that. You have to continue to guard and we have to do a better job. They’re going to call fouls, that’s the way it is. Every game I watched today and last night, they’re calling these fouls so we just have to adjust to it.
First half, we were pretty good and we did a pretty good job defensively. I think Fordham is a good offensive team. We held them to 20-some points. They made a couple tough shots in that group, but the second half I think we felt we had control of the game. We lost our defensive edge, and they took advantage of that and that’s something that we obviously have to work on. Our guards are inexperienced in terms of playing out there and knowing how to play the front of the zone and keeping guys in front of it. That is a lesson learned and hopefully we can work on that and do a better job but I like those two guards (Frazier and Severe). They are very, very good players and I take nothing away from those two kids.”
What kind of impact did C.J. Fair have?
“He is such a good offensive rebounder. I think his first couple buckets were off the offensive boards. Getting to the basket, the way they’re calling the game, if you get to the basket with the ball there is a 90 percent chance there is going to be a foul called so that is what he does. The new rules really help him and the fact that he is going to go to the basket with the ball.
Before it was hand checking and hands on. Now it is virtually any contact with the ball. I think it will take awhile for everyone to get used to the rules, and the calls. I think for the referees as well as the players -- it will take a little while.”
Did you think C.J. Fair played better tonight?
“He had a few turnovers in the first half but none in the second half. He was much more solid, and steady. That’s what I expect out of him.”
How did DaJuan (Coleman) play tonight?
“He got in there and got some rebounds. I think he needs to finish better. We have to do a better job getting him the ball. He’s getting the ball too far outside the lane, and we need to work on getting him the ball a little closer. He gets rebounds and gets in the middle.”
Did Tyler (Ennis) look better attacking the hoop?
“There were a lot of opportunities for him. In all fairness, Cornell got back and played good defense. Fordham is an offensive team that wants to outscore you -- they don’t guard like Cornell did, so he gets more opportunities to get to the basket.
Every game you learn something different, something new. We played an efficient first half and played well offensively and didn’t have many turnovers. We got good shots, we got to the basket, when we missed we had someone there to pick up an offensive rebound. On defense we contested their three-point shooter and we did a better job preventing people from getting into the lane. The only guy that got in the lane first half was Branden Frazier. The other guys didn’t get in the lane. The second half anyone who wanted to get into the lane did, which was disappointing. We had a very good first half and we need to fix the things from the second half.”
