Opening Statement:
“One thing -- we’re going to play several teams this year that are going to take the shot clock down and be patient. I thought Colgate did a tremendous job in being patient, taking the shot clock down and making us play defense for 35 seconds and that is not easy to do. A couple times when the shot clock was running down and they took a tough shot and made it -- that’s always tough when that happens. But I think that we were pretty solid defensively. Offensively, we got the ball inside and we got to the foul line. You’re playing a slow-pace game."
"You can’t miss 16 free throws. We missed three dunks and we missed three other layups. You have to capitalize on those things. The first half we didn’t get on the boards. We were plus four rebounding. The second half we got on the boards better. That’s something you obviously have to do if you are playing a smaller team. You have to take advantage of your size.”
“I thought that they were leaving people open. They are going to guard Trevor (Cooney). I thought Tyler (Ennis) making those shots was big for us. I think we are still looking to find other guys. Ron (Patterson) has been shooting the ball well in practice. He had some good looks today. Michael (Gbinije) has been shooting it well. We won't be playing a zone -- I don’t think that much, but when we do, people are going to play Trevor (Cooney) and we will have other guys that are going to make shots.”
“I think overall there were a lot of positive things. We didn’t make a lot of turnovers but we made three or four bad ones in transition when we could score. Our defensive pressure was good. There were 12 turnovers in the first half and I thought they were really patient. They did a great job with the basketball and I thought that overall we did a good job defensively. When you leave a good shooter open, they are going to make them and that’s a lesson that we need to learn now."
"Offensively we need to shoot better from the free-throw line. We have to make some of those layups around the basket. Overall it was a learning experience. We have a day of practice and we come back Monday for another one.”
Are you getting a sense that Michael (Gbinije) is getting more acclimated to his role?
“I think we are getting better. He made some good plays today. Obviously we can’t miss free throws or layups. We got a lot of good looks from the three point line. We have to shoot a little better.”
Colgate didn’t shoot the ball that well overall but they shot it well from three-point range.
“Inside they really almost didn’t try to shoot. Their whole offense was to go in and not shoot inside and throw it out. We adjusted pretty well to that. I think that when a team has three or four good three-point shooters and they spend the whole game trying to shoot threes, they’re going to make some. It’s just going to happen. But they are not getting to the foul line or anything inside."
"If we just played a little offense, the game would have never been in question. You can’t beat us just shooting threes. We actually defended the three point line pretty well. When they take 35 seconds to make 15 or 20 passes and we still defend the line pretty well, that’s pretty good. They made 11. They made a couple of really tough ones but that’s okay. That’s acceptable. They’re not getting anything inside the basket. We’re not putting them on the foul line.”
“The other night we did a good job with Fordham defensively from the perimeter, but we didn’t do a good job defending the dribbler and we put him on the foul line too many times so we did a better job. Fordham is a little better. That’s a different team, but they) (Colgate moved the ball as well as anybody we will play and they have probably as good of shooters as most teams we will play. We did a great job finding (Murphy) Burnatowski and (Pat) Moore, who hit his first one and he only hit one after that. He is a tremendous shooter. The kid (Austin Tillotson), he made three threes -- that was a little bit of a surprise -- but sometimes you get surprises. That’s the way it works sometimes. It was a good learning experience. I think we learned some things. We have a long way to go. We have a lot of work to do. That’s a hardworking group. They are trying to figure it out. We will see how we improve as we go along.”
Tyler Roberson is still kind of finding his rythym. Is there anything you'd like to see him do better?
"He was aggressive. He got good shots. I'd like to see him not miss two dunks, but I think he can work on that."
Do you think that's a product of game situations? Is he missing those kinds of shots in practice at all?
"No, not really. He's not getting a lot of minutes. It's hard to get a rhythm when you're a freshman and not getting a lot of minutes. I think the key is you got the shots, you got opportunities and when you're coming in and out and not playing that many minutes, 10 minutes - he got eight shots up, he was aggressive on the boards. If he made his dunks and a lay-up, he would have hit 10 points and five rebounds in 10 minutes. So that's good, but he's not getting a lot of minutes."
Have you seen Tyler Ennis get more comfortable from three in practice over the past few weeks?
"He works on it every day. He shoots a ton of shots every day and he gets good looks and looked good shooting it today."
