Head Coach Jim Boeheim Post Game Quotes
Opening Statement:
“It was a good game for the freshmen, to get them on the floor and let them play. I thought Ron (Patterson) was good, he was active on both ends of the floor and Tyler (Roberson) rebounded the ball very well. It was a good opportunity for those guys to play and get some minutes under their belts. We did a good job with the full court press for a few minutes in the beginning to get the game going in the right direction. This is always a tough time period (final exam week), we play this game and then we don’t play again until next Sunday and then the following Friday, so we pretty much just have two games in two weeks. We came through a long trip, and a tough game Tuesday. Today we made a good effort with the full court defense and established enough room to get some guys some minutes. It is a good learning experience, and getting those young guys in the game was good.”
Can you talk a little bit about the full court press you used in the first half?
“We’ve practiced it. We haven’t used it in a while, but the guys did well with it and it worked pretty well, so I’m happy with that.”
Can you talk about the inside play of DaJuan (Coleman) and what you have seen of him early on this year?
“I think it is a work in progress. He is working on it, doing some things better. His position is better; he is finishing better out there. It is a process. We are doing a little better job looking for him. But we have to get better inside. It is something we continually work on and are trying to improve.”
Is there anything that surprised you (about Binghamton)?
“No, they were good. They were really patient early. We knew the big kid could shoot, we just didn’t get up on him and that happens, players don’t understand sometimes what they need to be worried about. They (Binghamton) were patient and shot the ball well. We hurt them with the press and we turned the game back to us.”
Can you talk about taking 35 three pointers tonight?
“It is what people do against us when we play zone and we are going to do the same thing. It’s tough to get it inside and pack it in there, so they are going to make us shoot it. If you make 36 percent of them, it is 50. We have to take those shots.”
When Ron (Patterson) was out there hitting shots, where you looking for B.J. (Johnson) and Tyler (Roberson) to follow his aggression?
“Ronnie (Ron Patterson) he finds shots. I told him at halftime, I hope his arm is not sore. He finds shots and again they are playing that zone defense, protecting the inside, which is what they should do. But he is going to get looks. I was happy he drove and made a play over there. Trevor (Cooney) made a nice play off a drive. You can do that against zones. That’s good to do, you don’t have to just shoot it. Ronnie doesn’t worry too much. He just goes out and plays. He has had a year in a high-quality prep school league and he was one of the best players in the league or voted that theoretically. I think he has the ability to go out there and get something going on offense. Some days he shoots it really good in practice and some days he can’t hit the rim. I never had a player that gets to the extremes that he gets to, even in a game. He just has to be more consistent and it takes time. He works hard everyday. He is working with one of the best shooters that has every played in college. There is definitely progress. I thought Tyler (Roberson) was good, a couple of fouls, but when you press there are going to be some of those. It is one of the reasons we don’t press a lot. You don’t want to foul that much. I thought he was aggressive. I thought it was a good game for those two guys particularly.”
How nice was it to get Nolan (Hart) in the game?
“I told Nolan (Hart) to go sit with them (the fans) up there. They wanted him. I was happy to let him go. Those guys are good kids, they work hard. I’m going to try to get them out there, but we need to play these freshmen, even if it is in a late-game situation. It is still good they are out there. It is good to get them that kind of experience.”
What was it like to see (former Orange) Lazarus Sims on the other bench?
“He is one of the greatest players we have had or one of the best point guards, certainly the smartest point that we have had here. He loves the game, he knows the game. I think he will be a great coach. I give that team a lot of credit, they moved the ball, they played well and did a lot of good things. We are bigger and stronger then they are, but they did all things you need to do to be successful. They were good. The press hurt them a little bit, but if it didn’t it would have been much closer.”
A lot of history at Madison Square Garden, are you looking forward to going there?
“It is great to go there, we love playing in New York. St. Johns is playing well. I think they have a really good team. I think it will be a great match up, it will be a great game down there.”
How important is it to keep playing the BIG EAST schools?
“We are going to play. You are going to play non-league games and we are going to play some of those teams over the years and as everyone will find out, once you get into a different league, those games are just not the same. They don’t have the same meaning; it is just the way it is. Before the BIG EAST our biggest game was St. Bonaventure and we don’t play them and no one cares. Obviously, fans are not disappointed we are playing in the ACC. Those are the only people that matter at the end of the day. If they are happy we are all happy.”
