Coach Boeheim Quotes
Carrier Dome—Syracuse, N.Y.
Opening Statement:
“I thought our defense was really good early. We didn’t make some shots that we had early. We made some through the second half—we shot better, but so did they. Our defense broke down a little bit –
in the second half they got inside. We didn’t rebound the ball as well as we needed to but when we had to make plays, we made plays. I thought the guards – Brandon (Triche) and Michael (Carter-Williams), played very well. I thought this was their best game in a long time. They were good on defense and good on offense and it was a slow-paced game so they could play more. C.J. (Fair) was terrific as always. It was a good win.”
How did you think James Southerland played in his first game back?
“You know he’s going to be nervous a little bit. He was a little off in the first half but he got the same shots in the second half and he’s going to make those shots if he gets them.”
Did you have a predetermined number of minutes for James )Southerland) to play?
“No, not really. They’re a zone team so he’s probably going to play a little bit more in that situation.”
What type of impact does James (Southerland) have on the offense as a whole?
“He’s a good shooter. He gives us a threat outside that pulls the defense out to him, which should open some things up inside. We aren’t taking advantage of that but we need to do that. It gives us an eighth guy. Seven guys are really not enough. You can get by with seven but if you have foul problems or if you get into a fast-paced game, you need that one extra guy. It gives us three forwards and we have three guards.
I thought Trevor (Cooney) did a really good job defensively today. It was such a slow game that we could keep Mike (Carter-Williams) and Brandon (Triche) in the game. With three forwards and three guards and two centers, if they get in foul trouble we can keep them in there. They did get into foul trouble today but they did a good job inside.”
Can you talk about team chemistry with Southerland back?
“It’s going to change, it’s different, it takes time to get used to it. There’s just no way of figuring out how it’s going to work when you don’t play in games. Practice is different from games. I thought he played extremely well. When he missed those four (shots) to start, it was really hard. Then he hit his first in the second half. Then he made a good run out and got the dunk and then made a pass to Brandon (Triche). Then we ran a little play at the top for him and he hit the three up there. So I was surprised he got going. It’s tough when you have a bad first half your first time back, but he got it going.”
How do you envision Jerami Grant’s role now that he has had that expanded playing time?
“Same role it has been—get out there and play well. He has the same role. He got a great experience. He really came through big time in tough situations. We won four games out of six and it could have been two out of six very easily. To play those games with seven guys was a very difficult stretch, but Jerami stepped it up big time. He’s got great experience that’s going to really help him the rest of this year and he’ll continue to start the rest of the year. He’ll get a lot of good, productive minutes.”
