Promotional Activities
Prior to taking part in any kind of promotional activity or making any donation, the requestingÂ
agency must complete the Donation of Items form or the Student-Ath- lete/Coach Promotional Activity form. The event or donation must be approved by the OAC, as well as the appropriate athletic department designee, prior the event or appearance. In addition, the OAC will send an exit interview to the requesting
agency after the event has taken place. If student-athletes make an appearance at an event, they must sign the Student-Athlete Appearance follow-up form.
A member institution or an organized entity thereof (e.g., fraternity, sorority or student government organization) or a noninstitutional, charitable or educational agency may use a student-athlete’s name, picture or appearance to support its char- itable or educational activities, or to support activities considered incidental to the student-athlete’s participation in intercollegiate athletics, provided:
1. The student-athlete receives written approval to participate from the Director of Athletics (or designee who is not a coach).
2. The student-athlete does not miss class
3. The student-athlete may accept actual and necessary expenses from the institu- tion or nonprofit related to participation.
4. All moneys derived from activity or project goes directly to the institution or nonprofit agency.
5. The student-athletes name, picture or appearance is not used to promote the commercial ventures of any nonprofit agency. Any commercial items with names, likenesses or pictures of multiple student-athletes may be sold by the institution or charitable controlled outlets. However, an individual student-athletes name, like- nesses or pictures may not be sold.
6. The name or picture of a student-athlete with remaining eligibility may not appear on anÂ
institution’s printed promotional item that includes a reproduction of a product with which aÂ
commercial entity is associated if the commercial entity’s offi cially registered regular trademark or logo also appears on the item.
In addition, Syracuse University may provide or sell an autographed ball, to support the charitable or educational activities of Syracuse University or noninstitutional charitable or educational agencies or to support activities considered incidental to the student-athlete’s participation in intercollegiate athletics. However, an institu- tion may not provide funding, directly, indirectly or through paid advertisements,
to benefi t a high school athletics program. Providing an autographed game ball(s) to high schools, preparatory schools or junior colleges for fund-raising purposes would not be permissible.
Additional regulations exist when men’s basketball is asked to participate in pro- motionalÂ
activities; an institution or a staff member shall not provide a donation to a nonprofi tÂ
foundation that expends funds for the benefi t of a nonscholastic team or teams, prospectiveÂ
student-athletes or individuals associated with prospective student-athletes, regardless ofÂ
whether the foundation provides funding to or services for all ages.
