Syracuse Player Quotes
Syracuse vs. Tulane
September 21, 2013
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Terrel Hunt, Sophomore, Quarterback
On Chris Clark getting open:
“He made something happen. He got open. He’s a great player and very fast. It helps that he’s smaller because they don’t really see him.”
On scoring during each of the first three possessions:
“The defense just kept giving us the ball, so our offense kept moving.”
On how special teams made his job easier:
“It just made our job easier. We were right near the end-zone every time we got the ball.”
On the past two weeks:
“The game plan is a lot easier when we’re executing. It’s definitely been a lot of fun, because in practice everything has been going smooth.”
On offensive tempo:
“Coach (Shafer) kept trying to slow us down in the last two minutes, but we kept saying ‘We want to score, we want to score’. The tempo definitely helps a lot. You get to see the defense, and they don’t get to disguise anything.”
Clay Cleveland, Senior, Fullback
On being a walk-on player and now having two touchdowns:
“It is a long time coming. Last year I was starting, but we ran the spread and I didn’t get in as much as I would have liked. I stuck with it and now the hard work is paying off.”
On the first touchdown:
“I didn’t know I was so open and it all happened at once. It was awesome though.”
On the second touchdown:
“We ran the same exact play. The first one they were covering me late on it and we [the team] noticed it and took advantage of it.”
Eric Crume, Junior, Nose Tackle
On the team’s confidence to block kicks today:
“We were confident. Even on field goals and extra points we saw they didn’t have a high pad level. Our plan right away was to lay right or lay left and we knew we would have opportunities to make plays on special teams. We saw a weak point and we wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.”
On the blocked punt:
“My eyes lit up and I stuck my hand up. I saw an opportunity. It brought me back to my basketball playing days when I would try to block a shot. It was very fun for me. I did not know where the ball went, I just looked up and I saw it bounce out of bounds. It was a crazy experience.”
Chris Clark, Junior, Wide Receiver
On the importance of a fast start:
“It’s very important to start fast. When you start fast, I don’t think they can keep up after that. We were scoring and they kept getting tired and we kept doing what we were supposed to do.”
On his preparation before the game:
“I worked hard in practice and watched a lot of film, going into the game. I was prepared for what they were going to do.”
On whether his lack of size motivates him:
“That is my motivation. I know I’m not the biggest guy. I just go out there and make plays and try to do what I can do.”
Jerome Smith, Junior, Running Back
On the team getting too confident:
“No way. We’re 2-2, we’re not a 4-0 type team right now. We are barely surviving, in reality. Right now we’ll just keep riding the wave and keep winning and taking care of business.”
On his take on the totality of the game:
“It’s a really good job by coaches and players. Our goal is for everybody to help each other – offense help the defense, defense helps the offense, special teams helps both sides."
On the team’s attitude heading into the Clemson game:
“Everybody is ready to go. We’re excited to bring them here. It’s the first ACC game. Bring them in here!”
Prince-Tyson Gulley, Senior, Running Back
On being 8-for-8 in the red zone:
“Our coaches talk to us about how we have to be 100% in red zone. We have goals we need to meet, so we keep that in mind when we get down to the red zone.”
On having the his highest rushing yards on the season:
“My lineman came to play today and they were opening holes and I was just running. The lineman made it easier with the tempo.”
On the effectiveness of this year’s offense:
“Like Terrel (Hunt) said, we switched the game plan and made it a little easier, and now we know we can execute the plays that we have. It makes it way easier for us to run the ball and pass the ball.”
