Matt Langel Quotes
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. Colgate
December 8, 2015
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Colgate Head Coach Matt Langel
Opening Statement:
“This is our fifth time playing here and I think they’re really a dangerous threat from the outside. They have four guys who are really capable of catching fire and that puts you in a little bit of a bind because we’re playing against a team that is also athletic and can get to the basket and can get offensive rebounds. That being said, I think they stepped up and made some shots. Michael Gbinije’s first one was practically a foot from the “Block S” (at midcourt) and he buries it and you have to hope that you’re forcing them to take those and that they’ll miss those. They mixed them in. They hit a couple difficult ones that they’re very capable of making and then we fell down and let them get some easier ones that they made both in transition and in the half court.
“I was proud of our guys. We have a very inexperienced team. We play a lot of freshmen and sophomores and we got off to a decent start in the season with a nice win against George Mason and we’ve had some less enthusiastic performances. I think, despite the final result of the game, we grew up a little bit and had some guys step up and make some good plays. They didn’t always result in baskets or made field goals or assists, but we made good basketball plays. I think we battled on the glass a little bit more than we have been and I think with Tyler (Lydon), DaJuan (Coleman), (Michael) Gbinije, and even (Malachi) Richardson rebounding from the perimeter, they can put some pressure on you, but we did a good job battling on the glass. So again, I think despite the result, we can move ahead and take some positive things.”
What can you say about the rebounds?
“The final rebounding statistic is not something that coaches typically look at. You look at the chances there were to get rebounds. They made a lot of field goals, especially in the second half, so there weren’t a lot of defensive rebounds to get. But the fact that we limited them to nine offensive rebounds of the 25 or however many there were available to get was something that was a decent percentage for us. We got to the glass and created some loose balls and found a way to come up with them. Again, I’m sure that’s something they’re working on with their young guys in the zone, but we were able to get ahold of them. You take away some aggression and determination to find a way to get the ball.”
