Student-Athlete Quotes
Oshae Brissett, F, Fr.
Coach Boeheim said you are a better rebounder than he expected, what gives you the energy to go up and grab the ball?
“It’s just easy points. I know if I get the ball I can go right to Frank (Howard), and he can start the fast break. That’s my job on the team. Coach tells me to go up and rebound, and if I don’t, I get taken out of the game. I go into every game looking to get double-digit rebounds.”
What was the key to rebounding against a strong opponent tonight?
“I came into tonight thinking it was just any other game. I’ve played with a couple of Maryland players before, so I wasn’t really thinking about Maryland, I was thinking about the guys I have played against. I did my best to stay as calm as possible.”
You have three double-doubles early in your career. What’s been the key to your success?
“Just attacking the glass. It’s my mindset every game. You have to want to rebound. I go into every game thinking: attack, attack, attack.”
Tyus Battle, G, So.
Health wise, how close to 100% were you tonight?
“Not very close. It was tough for me to make plays out there tonight. Explosiveness, stopping and jumping were difficult. I fought through it, my teammates stepped up tonight, and it was a great win.”
Tell us about the three-pointer at the end:
“Frank (Howard) does that all the time, he has great vision. I knew he was going to find me, I got open and knocked down the shot.”
First big test of the year, and you guys really stepped up. What can you say about tonight?
“We really stepped up, and rebounded the ball. We also had some huge blocks and Oshae (Brissett) was huge on the boards tonight. I thought it was a great win.”
Frank Howard, Jr., G
How much did this game mean to you personally after growing up near their campus?
“To be honest, every game is personal to me. Just hearing the rumors and talk about the team, we come out every game with a chip on our shoulder. That’s where our energy and passion comes from.”
“We just want to play with that mentality every game. They shot the ball tremendously tonight. We didn’t get our shots to fall. We had a lot of in-and-outs and easy misses under the rim. I’m just proud of the way we fought back and fought through the hard times.”
On paper, this was a step up in competition for you guys, with Maryland being a Power 5 team. Did it feel like it out there?
“Yeah definitely. They are a great team. Whatever conference they’re in, Maryland is a great team. They have a lot of shooters, versatile guys, and big guys that finish. They played great. They will probably be a tournament team this year. But I’m just happy with the win right now.”
There were 20 lead changes and 15 ties in the game. What can you say about keeping your poise throughout the game?
“This game was great for us. We need these types of games early. Those hard-nosed games, those dog fights. We continue to fight through the adversity. We want to stay calm. If they had gone on a 20-0 run, we still would stay calm, get in our set, and execute.”
Bourama Sidibe, Fr., F
Your freshman class plays with so much energy. Talk a little about that and how you just go after everything.
“I have always played hard since I was in high school. People sleep on me a lot because there are guys whose names are bigger than mine. But I am better than them. I just play hard every game to show that I am better than those people.”
For a big guy, you don't seem to get tired. Are you really well conditioned?
“I work hard in practice every day so that practice seems harder than games. The more work I put into practice, the easier the game is for me.”
Do you talk to your teammates and freshmen guys about just getting after it and playing as hard as you can?
“Yeah we do. Most of the time I talk to Oshae [Brissett] and Howard [Washington]. No matter what situation we are in and what coach says to us, we need to fight through. If we fight through, good things will happen to us.”
