Opening Statement:
"I think this was a really good outing for us. We learned early right away that we weren’t moving; we were standing defensively and they made three-straight threes. That’s a good lesson for us to learn. That’s why these games are important. I think Le Moyne is very well coached. Patrick [Beilein] has done a really good job over there changing the whole team. They have really good patience and move the ball well.
I thought our press was better. We forced some turnovers tonight. There were a lot of half-court rebounds we didn’t get and we have to think about that. It’s not good. There were a lot of long shots, balls bouncing out and ultimately we have to do a better job of tracking those down.
I thought Tyus was much better tonight. Five assists, no turnovers - I thought he did a really good job. We shot the ball pretty good. That’s the way I think we can shoot it - but the defense after the slow start got us active. We got our hands on a lot of balls.
Overall, these two games have been good for us because Tyus has had the opportunity to play the point and we don’t know what’s going to happen next week with the point guard position. We’ll have to wait and see. We probably won’t know anything until right about game time next week. We’ll see how the health of our point guards is over the next few days, but at least now we’ve had two games where we’ve played them with Tyus heavily moving the ball which is good for us. I look forward to seeing who’s ready next week."
How have you seen Tyus [Battle] develop in ball handling and scoring?
“Well, he’s a pretty good ball handler and it’s hard to make that switch. He’s always been a scoring guard so I think he’s done a good job all things considered but he’s definitely more of a scoring guard. I think the thing he did tonight, taking the opportunity to get to the basket, is what he does best and he did that tonight.”
How do you think Marek Dolejaz's three-point shot helped open up the defense?
“He made [baskets] towards the end of the last year at the foul area and the 15-foot area. He’s getting out there and he’s getting better. He’s worked hard on it and he’s very active. I thought he was really good in the first half and really got us going.”
How do you think Elijah [Hughes] is adjusting from his redshirt year last year and playing this year?
“I think the guys we’ve had—and now Elijah—have worked hard during their redshirt years and really benefited in their overall play and developed their shooting more. [Elijah] got to play every minute of every practice so he was always in and he really pushed and benefited from the year. And you can benefit from the year—most guys who have redshirted here have benefited.”
How has the team dynamic changed with more depth on the roster?
“I think we’ve got about 10 guys if everyone is healthy. We’ll see how it all plays out but we’re happy to have a lot of guys—obviously now there are three guys out—but now we have guys starting who wouldn’t have even played these games, but they will have their time and they will shape how the future will be built. It’s all a part of the game.”
What was your overall thought on Le Moyne and their improvement as a team?
“They are much better. They are a completely different team and Patrick [Beilein] has done a really good job of getting guys over there. They’ve got good shooters, and good ball handlers; we really had to extend ourselves. We were just playing at a certain level and they were right there with us, so we had to turn it up and play the way we had to play, which is good for us. They know what they’re doing and they play really hard, but I’m very impressed [with how they] turned it around in a year. They’ll be competitive in their division this year for sure.”
What is the status on the team's point guards?
“We’d like to get our point guards back obviously, and we’re a different team when we do get those back, but part of this is a good experience for the guys who play more than they’d get to play. We’d like to get everybody back healthy soon.”
