Jim Boeheim Quotes - EWU
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. Eastern Washington
November 6, 2018
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Jim Boeheim
Opening Statement
“Offensively, this was our first struggle in a game. We didn’t shoot the ball well from the perimeter, while in the first two games (exhibition) we made about nine or 10 three’s in each game. It just makes the game a lot smoother when you do that. Tyus (Battle), Buddy (Boeheim) and Elijah (Hughes) all got really good shots, but if you don’t make those three’s it’s a difficult game.
“I thought we got more aggressive rebounding to start the second half. Our defense was good the whole game. They took their time by moving and passing the ball and we played well defensively. We just didn’t shoot the ball well and that’s going to happen. “
What can you say about Jalen Carey’s first game?
“He’s rough, but it’s hard when you don’t play. He did some good things. It’s going to take him some more time, and we’ll give him some more days.”
There was a lot of full-court press today, is that a product of your depth?
“We’ve been pressing the whole time in exhibition games and that was fairly effective. We couldn’t get anything going offensively, but we got some steals, which was the difference as we got some points off the press.”
What did you think of Elijah Hughes?
“He never got comfortable. He has relied a little too much on his jumper. He needs to get to the basket a little more, but he will get there. It’s the first game.”
How can Oshae Brissett’s improvement help the team?
“He got on the boards, he was physical, he got to the basket. He has been shooting the ball well, but that’s what he does the best, I think. He has improved and has worked really hard. And that’s what we hope for all of our players.”
What kind of effort do you see in Howard Washington coming back from injury?
“It takes about this time (to recover from the injury) but he’s a really hard worker. He comes in everyday and works. It’s what he does. Frank (Howard) has also worked really hard to try and get back, (we’ll) just see when that is.”
What can you take away from the first game of the season?
“Every time you go out to play, you are going to learn something. More bad things today than we would like to look at. I think our offense is a little difficult when you don’t have a point guard out there. You have to do more ball movement and we aren’t moving things the way we need to move them to be a good team right now.”
How has missing practice been detrimental to Jalen Carey’s development?
“That’s when a point guard learns. A freshman point guard needs all that time to adjust to run the offense two or three times. He is not used to it. Practice is important contrary to some thought out there. We haven’t practiced like the team we would be. It is not helping us and we are trying to get through it the best we can.
"It’s like if the New Orleans Saints didn’t have a quarterback to pass and they ran every time, they wouldn’t be very good. We don’t have a quarterback. We are good enough to win, but this is basketball and we are trying to survive, get people healthy, and do the best we can. We are fortune to have the four guys that can handle the ball and make plays and pass, but it is not the same thing.”
