Opening Statement
“I told them during halftime that we were going to come in and make some shots. I thought when they got (within) seven, Elijah (Hughes) and Marek (Dolezaj) did a little better work and we ended up getting a layup or two in a row that put us back up. I thought that we really played well defensively in that situation. They made a lot of really tough shots. We made the plays that we had to at the end.
“I thought this was Marek’s game. He hasn’t played like this this year and he did a good job. He’s a very good shooter, he showed me that. He can make three’s and is a good free-throw shooter – much better than a few years ago.
“I thought that team (Seattle) was good. They’ve got a lot of veterans, (Terrell) Brown’s as good as anybody and in the lane he can play. He’s a really good player and I think they will be a real good team at the end of the year. It’s a good win. We’ve got a lot of games to play, we’ve got to get better and we know that, and we will keep trying to get there.”
Are you ok with Quincy Guerrier taking three’s?
“He’s good, he can make them. He makes them in practice, It’s all based on practice, what we do in practice. The reason we didn’t play anybody in the second half is because it was going to get close, and this is not an experiment. They got close and we needed to keep the guys in there that were in the game, used to the game. You’re not going to put someone into the game when they’ve taken a 22-point lead down to 15. You’re not going to put anybody new into the game in that situation because we aren’t going to jeopardize the game in that situation. Joe (Girard III), obviously he was playing great, but that’s the way that game turned out.”
Will Jalen Carey have a legitimate role on this team?
“It starts in practice, and he has to play well in practice and then he has to get an opportunity in games, which he will, and he has to play well. He hasn’t played well in the time he’s had, and the best players are going to play. The guys we are playing are the guys we feel that can help us win, and until that changes, that’s the way it goes. Joe’s (Girard III) not going to play like that every night. Maybe he will, but we’ll see. We need Brycen (Goodine) to get better. I think he’s got a chance to really help us. He needs to (get better) and obviously Quincy (Guerrier) has to give us a little bit more as we go forward.”
What is it about Brycen Goodine's game that you like?
“It goes back to what we see in practice, everyday in practice, and he’s a very good shooter. He’s athletic, very athletic, gets to the rim well, and he’s learning how to play college basketball, which is not unusual for freshman to learn. I think that one reason that Joe (Girard III) has an easy adjustment is he had to do everything, every game for four years. He’s used to having the whole world on his shoulders every game, for the last four years, probably five.
“I thought Elijah (Hughes) corrected his game in the second half. He was taking too many tough shots and he got in the lane. I thought he made some plays, I thought he was more of a playmaker in the second half and he got good shots. He’s been carrying a big load for us. He’s going to have the ball a lot. When we needed to make plays he made the plays for us and he’s going to have to continue to do that.”
