In 2008, Battaglino guided the Orange to the highest-scoring season in NCAA history. Syracuse set records for points (541) and goals (380), as well as goals (18.01) and points (25.64) per game. Katie Rowan led the nation in scoring and tied the NCAA single-season mark with 69 assists. She and Christina Dove became the first two players in the program’s history to record 100 points in a season.
Battaglino joined SU after spending nine years as the head coach of the Bethlehem Central High School girls varsity lacrosse team in Delmar, N.Y.
While at Bethlehem, Battaglino led the varsity squad to six Section II-Class A championships and four New York State Regional championships. Battaglino coached the team to the New York State semifinals in 2004, 2002 and 1999, and to the New York State finals in 2003. Battaglino earned high school coach of the year honors from 1999-2004 while producing 14 High School All-Americans during that six-year span. In 2007, 14 of Battaglino’s former players competed at the Division I level, including four captains and three current SU players, Katie Rowan, Halley Quillinan and Tee Ladouceur. Prior to his arrival in 1996, Bethlehem had a record of 0-60.
In 2006, Battaglino served on the selection committee for the U.S. Lacrosse National Team.
Battaglino earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Siena College in 1986. He earned a master’s in environmental planning in 1992 from the University of Albany and soon after he began coaching and turned his attention to education, earning his M.A. in 1998 from Russell Sage College.
As a player, Battaglino competed in ice hockey and lacrosse, earning rookie of the year, coach’s trophy and all-league honors.
