Syracuse women's rowing head coach Justin Moore announced the hiring of Jim Lister as assistant coach on July 1, 2013. The UAlbany alum came to Syracuse after coaching the previous 10 years at Duke, most recently as the Blue Devils' associate head coach and recruiting coordinator.
"I would like to thank Justin Moore and the senior administrators at Syracuse University for giving me this opportunity," Lister said. "I am looking forward to working with a strong program in the northeast with a long tradition in rowing. This new challenge allows me to use my experiences to assist the team in its ascension towards a top program in the ACC as well as nationally."
Lister's skills as a coach and recruiter have helped make Duke a perennially strong national program, as well as a contender in the competitive ACC. This past season, Dukes varsity eight and varsity four finished second at the ACC Championship, leading the way to a third-place overall finish behind No. 6 Virginia and just two points behind No. 16 Clemson.
"We are very excited to have Jim joining our staff," Moore said. "He is a very professional coach, who has every skill set this position requires. Jim is a tireless recruiter, who utilizes the latest technology to streamline the recruiting process and enhance communication with our prospective student-athletes, their coaches and their families. He is a coach who maximizes the potential of the athletes he works with. His boats go fast and the women in them are almost always smiling. The timing of this hire also seems perfect. Jim has 10 years of experience in the ACC and has helped propel Duke to its highest finish in the history of the program. As Syracuse moves to the ACC, Jim and our entire staff are committed to advancing our rowing program to become one of the nation's fastest."
In his time at Duke, Lister worked with all levels of the program, from helping build its novice program to the largest in program history to coaching varsity boats.
In 2007, Lister implemented a system to evaluate and monitor the physiological development of the team through protocols including lactic acid and lean body mass testing with the latest technology at the Duke Sports Medicine K Lab.
In his 17 years of coaching, Lister has developed athletes at numerous programs in the northeast, including the Cornell heavyweight men. He also coached for Skidmore, Wellesley, UAlbany, Brookline High School and Community Rowing Inc. of Boston. Lister also founded the Saratoga Rowing Association which has developed into the largest scholastic team in New York and one of the most competitive junior programs in the country. Many of the athletes on the team that Lister coached have gone on to row successfully at top rowing programs in the country.
In 2008 and 2009, Lister served as Team Manager for the USRowing U23 squad, which competed in Brandenburg, Germany and Prague, Czech Republic. His duties included assisting the coaching staff and 60 athletes as well as serving as a liaison between the coaches and the International Federation of Rowing Association's officials.
Lister's skill in boat maintenance and repair developed during his time as a boat builder for Van Dusen Racing Shells in Concord, Mass.
Lister received his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Albany and has a master’s degree in exercise science from Skidmore College.
Lister has a wife, Meg, and two children.
