Assistant coach Kristyn Sandberg will enter her third season with the Orange in 2018.
Sandberg helped Syracuse to back-to-back winning seasons, finishing 27-26 in 2015-16 with a 9-14 record in ACC play. In 2016-17, the Orange recorded their sixth 30-win season, closing out the year 31-19 and 10-10 in league matchups. The finish in 2016-17 was the best since 2012.
Sandberg helped coach USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top-10 Finalist Sydney O'Hara to a historic season. O'Hara boasted a .476 batting average, .626 on-base percentage and .833 slugging percentage to set new single-season Orange records and lead the nation in batting average and on-base percentage, as well as saves from the pitcher's circle (6). She earned Syracuse softball's first espnW National Player of the Week after hitting four home runs in a single game at NC State to tie an NCAA record and become 1-of-5 to accomplish the feat. As a whole, the Orange broke single-season records in team batting average (.307), hits (433) and on-base percentage (.388).
Kristyn Sandberg joined the Orange coaching staff in August 2015 after serving as a graduate manager at Louisiana State University for three seasons, including the Tigers 2015 run to the Women’s College World Series. A 2012 second-team All-American and first-team All-Region selection at the University of Georgia, Sandberg played a key role in helping the Bulldogs to the Women’s College World Series in 2009 and 2010. She earned SEC All-Freshmen Team honors in 2009 and was named First Team All-SEC in 2012. Sandberg completed her collegiate playing career ranked in the top 10 in several offensive categories, including home runs (fourth), slugging percentage (sixth) and walks (fifth).
Â
In 2012, Sandberg was drafted by the USSSA Pride, garnering Rookie of the Year honors after finishing in the top in multiple categories, including first in RBI’s (33) and second in slugging percentage (.624). During her three seasons in Florida, the Pride won the 2013 and 2014 Cowles Cup Championships. Sandberg was traded to the Pennsylvania Rebellion in 2015.
Â
A standout student and member of the community, Sandberg was a four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member and was named to the 2012 SEC Community Service Team. She received CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second team honors and was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Sandberg earned her undergraduate degree in health and physical education in December 2012 and her master’s degree in kinesiology from LSU in 2015.
