Julie Knerr joined the Syracuse women’s hockey program as an assistant coach before the start of the 2018-19 season and quickly cemented her position on the coaching staff.
Knerr has prioritized working with Syracuse’s underclassmen in her first two years with the program, her efforts culminating in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 freshmen classes registering 111 points (42-69), along with Mae Batherson (6-16-22) picking up All-USCHO Rookie Team honors in 2019-20. In Knerr’s first season on the staff, ‘Cuse won the first College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament Title in program history.
Knerr made her way to Syracuse after multiple coaching stints at programs across Central New York. The Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec, native has coached at Nazareth College, the Selects Academy at Bishop Kearney High School, and SUNY Cortland.
Knerr was a founding member of the Selects Academy, a program that brings elite youth hockey players from around the world to live and learn at Bishop Kearney while competing at the highest level of girls’ high school hockey.
Knerr was responsible for building the Selects Academy from scratch, including serving as the program’s head of recruiting. Alongside head coach Chris Baudo, Knerr helped guide the U16 team to a 52-11-6 record in 2016-17 before becoming the head coach of the U19 team the following year where she guided her team to a 23-17-2.
Her coaching career began at SUNY Cortland in 2015 where she joined the program upon her graduation from Syracuse.
Knerr, who earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education with a minor in coaching from Syracuse in 2015, was a crucial member of the Orange’s front line throughout her career. She helped the team advance to the College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament Championship in 2012-13 and 2014-15 and scored 38 points across 143 career games. She was also named to the CHA All-Academic Team every year while at Syracuse.
