Shawn Bagnall is in his third year with the Orange after joining the staff as the freshman coach and recruiting coordinator in 2010-11 following a seven-year stint at Gonzaga as the freshman/novice coach, junior varsity coach and recruiting coordinator for men's rowing.
Bagnall's impact on the program was felt at the varsity eight level in just his second season at Syracuse as two members of his 2011 freshman eight, Jake Martens and Mac Zink, helped lead the 2012 V8 to a fifth-place finish at the IRA Regatta, the Orange's top finish in 22 years.
In 2012, the freshmen eight recorded a victories at the Packard Cup vs. Dartmouth, in the third-level final at the IRA Regatta, and placed fifth in the petite final at Eastern Sprints.
In his first year with the Orange in 2011, Bagnall led the SU freshman eight to a victory over Dartmouth at the Packard Cup and a 10th-place overall finish at the Eastern Sprints.
At Gonzaga, Bagnall was integral to helping the freshman/novice program reach several milestones.
Two years prior, Bagnall and the Bulldogs earned their first freshman 8+ IRA invitation and placed 16th. His other achievements included guiding the freshman/novice 8+ to three second-place finishes (2006, 2008 & 2009) and a third-place finish (2010) at the WIRA championships. Bagnall also helped one rower from his junior varsity boat earn 2005 second-team All-WIRA honors.
During the summer of 2007, Bagnall served as the assistant coach for the USRowing Junior National Team Development and Selection Camp in Seattle, Wash. He helped train athletes for competition at the United States Club Nationals and selected the four that finished 14th at the Junior World Championships in Beijing, China.
The follwing year, Bagnall coached and was assistant camp director for St. Joseph's Preparatory Hawk Rowing in Philadelphia, Pa.
Prior to Gonzaga, Bagnall was the head men's rowing coach at Washington State University. At the helm of the Cougars, he helped improve the competition level and athlete retention rates for the club sport program.
His previous experience includes serving as the co-founder, program director and head coach of the Spokane River Rowing Association from 2003-06.
Bagnall, a 1999 graduate of Washington State, enjoyed a successful career as a varsity rower from 1996-99. As team captain, he was an All-Pacific-10 Conference selection in 1998. He received his bachelor's degree in psychology from WSU and completed his master's degree in sport and athletic administration at Gonzaga in 2009.
