Pair of Incoming Freshman Earn Silver at U19 Rowing World Cup

Incoming Syracuse freshmen Patrick Caldwell and Malcolm Stanton helped the United States claim a silver medal in the men's eight at the World Rowing Under 19 Championships, racing to a runner-up finish behind Great Britain on Aug. 9 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The U.S. crew crossed the finish line in 5:36.46, trailing gold medalist Great Britain (5:33.84) and finishing ahead of bronze medalist Germany (5:37.22). The result came after the American boat placed third in its opening heat earlier in the regatta, behind Great Britain and Italy and Croatia and ahead of Italy and Austria. In the grand final, the US crew also bested Croatia, Romania and Italy who finished in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.Â
Caldwell and Stanton will join the Orange this fall as part of an incoming class set to bolster a program that finished ninth as a team at last season's IRA National Championship, with all four Syracuse boats crossing the line inside the top 10.
The pair's performance on the world stage adds to a growing list of accolades for Syracuse rowing recruits and continues a trend of incoming Orange athletes making an impact internationally before ever stepping inside Ten Eyck Boathouse on Onondaga Lake.
