The win was the Hawks' first versus Syracuse since 1995, a string of four games. The Orangemen's four-game skid is the longest of the season and the longest losing streak since Syracuse opened the 1999 season with four consecutive defeats.
Hartwick jumped on top just one minute and 13 seconds into the game when Rob Catana took a cross from Jonathan Westmaas and slid it into the lower right corner of the goal. The Hawks went up 2-0 in the 32nd minute on a Kevin Saunders goal. Mike Deming was credited with the assist. Hartwick ended the scoring in the 75th minute on another goal by Catana, this time off a feed from Greg Victor.
The game was the last home appearance for Syracuse seniors Kevin Bacher (East Meadow, NY), Sean Boyle (Manlius, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), and Mario Cristofori (Fairport, NY).
The Orangemen enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the eighth seed in the eight-team field. They will take on top-seeded Connecticut on Sunday, November 5 at 1 p.m. in Storrs, CT. It is Syracuse's first back-to-back BIG EAST postseason appearances since 1995 and 1996.
