Field Edges Delaware, 3-2
9/2/2000 9:46:11 PM | Field Hockey
Fitzpatrick, who assisted on an earlier gaol that gave the Orangewomen a 2-0 lead, knocked home a rebound off of a penalty corner for her first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner. Syracuse's only two shots of the second half came in that sequence.
Delaware rallied from that 2-0 lead on goals by Jessica Breault and Jenn Fotiou. Breault scored her first collegiate goal with 5:16 left in the first half to give Delaware some momentum going into halftime. Breault tipped a crossing pass by freshman Erin Shaklee in mid-air into the net to get the Blue Hens on the board.
The Blue Hens missed on a big chance early in the second half when Juli Byrd hit the post on a penalty stroke.
However, shortly after Byrd's miss, Fotiou found the net for her first goal of the season to tie the game. The junior scored with 23:15 left to make it 2-2.
After Fitzpatrick's tally gave Syracuse a one-goal lead, Delaware (0-2) had its chances to tie. As time expired, the Blue Hens had one last penalty corner - one of 10 the Blue Hens failed to convert on the day. Byrd's shot went over the top of the cage.
The three-game round-robin tournament continues on Sept. 3 as Syracuse takes on Ball State at 1 p.m. Delaware will face Ball State on Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium to conclude the tournament.
