Sophomore midfielder Peter Lindahl (Ellicott City, MD) put the Orangemen out in front with a header into the top left corner of the goal in the 23rd minute. Schneider and junior midfielder John Andrade (East Providence, RI) were each credited with assists on the play.
The teams held each other scoreless for the next 61 minutes until sophomore forward Guido Cristofori (Fairport, NY) took a pass from Schneider and slid it by Villanova goalkeeper Sean Teesdale for the Orangemens second goal. It was Cristoforis first goal in a Syracuse uniform after tallying nine goals last season with West Virginia.
The Orangemen kept the pressure on the Villanova defense all game, outshooting the Wildcats, 18-9. Teesdale made nine saves in the loss, while senior Kevin Bacher (East Meadow, NY) made three stops in goal for the Orangemen. It was Bachers first shutout of the season, and the ninth of his career.
Syracuse is now 4-0-1 against the Wildcats over the past five seasons. The Orangemen are now 8-2-1 all-time versus Villanova.
The Orangemen continue their season-long homestand on Saturday when they take on the Red Foxes of Marist. Kickoff at The Soccer Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
