SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women's soccer team ended a two-game losing streak with four second-half goals in a 4-0 victory against Seton Hall on Friday afternoon at the Soccer Stadium.
Although the game was scoreless in the first half, it seemed Seton Hall would be the more unfortunate of the two teams. The Pirates lost junior goalkeeper Leah Miller for the entire game when she injured her shoulder in a collision with Syracuse freshman forward Natalie Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) with less than 20 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Orangewomen offense came alive in the second half when sophomore defender Courtney Spencer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) headed in a corner kick from senior co-captain Tracy Stalker (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) at 55:21 for a 1-0 lead. It was Spencer?s first career goal.
SU sophomore forward Nina Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster) scored when she kicked in a mishandled ball by Pirate replacement keeper Heather Hinton at 61:34. Senior co-captain Candy Reich (Pembroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) and freshman Stephanie Sybert (Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Prep) earned assists on the play.
Stalker put SU up 3-0 on a penalty kick drawn by sophomore midfielder Anne-Marie Lapalme (Granby, Que./John Abbott Prep/Mercer) at 78:17. Scalzo tallied her second goal at 82:45 when she teamed-up with Galas on a give-and-go.
Syracuse outshot Seton Hall 17-6 in the second half and 26-10 in the game. Orange freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) stopped four shots and notched her fourth shutout of the season. Hinton stopped six shots in 62:23 of relief in goal for the Pirates.
Syracuse improved to 7-4 overall. The Pirates fell to 3-8-1. SU will play at Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. SU owns a 3-0-1 advantage in the all-time series and defeated Rutgers, 3-1, last year in BIG EAST playoffs.
