SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Two goals by senior forward Matt Torok (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) helped the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 2-2 tie versus Seton Hall on Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. The Orangemen are now 7-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the BIG EAST. The Pirates now stand at 8-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league play.
Torok put SU on the board first in the 12th minute when he put in the rebound after sophomore forward Kirk Johnson's (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) shot hit the crossbar.
Seton Hall tied the game in the 35th minute on a goal by Phil Swenda. Luke Vercollone was credited with the assist. Vercollone then put the Pirates ahead, 2-1, in the 62nd minute when he lofted a shot over the head of Syracuse goalkeeper Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) at the back post.
The Orangemen scored the game's final goal with 11:19 left in the second half. Torok did the honors again, scoring off passes from Johnson and freshman forward Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy).
Both goalkeepers were kept busy as the game featured a combined 39 shots. The Pirates outshot the Orangemen, 23-16. Peters made a career-high 11 saves in the tie. Seton Hall goalkeeper Efren Aguirre made six saves.
The game was Torok's second multi-goal game in his last four games. He also had two goals and an assist versus Army on Oct. 9. He is second on the team with six goals.
With his two assists, Johnson became the 12th player in Syracuse history to score 50 career points. The sophomore has played just 31 career games. Park's assist was his 14th of the season, just two shy of the SU single-season record.
Syracuse plays the last of its four-game BIG EAST stretch on Friday when it travels to fourth-ranked St. John's. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
