
18th-Ranked Orangemen Lose at No. 5 St. John's

JAMAICA, N.Y. - The 18th-ranked Syracuse men's soccer team suffered its second shutout of the season, losing at fifth-ranked St. John's, 4-0, on Friday, Oct. 26. Syracuse is now 7-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Red Storm remains unbeaten at 9-0-3 overall and 5-0-3 in conference play.
St. John's scored three first half goals to put the game away early. Angel Rodriguez started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 15th minute. Matt Groenwald followed just more than nine minutes later with his first goal of the season. Peter Philipakos scored St. John's third goal of the first half in the 34th minute.
Philipakos accounted for all of the second-half scoring with a goal in the 77th minute. Simone Salinno contributed two assists in the match, while Timothy O'Neal, John Carrozza and Alberto Duenas each had one assist.
Guy Hertz made four saves in the win for the Red Storm. Syracuse senior Anthony Peters (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) started the game in net for the Orangmen, but was relieved at halftime by freshman Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston). Scheer made two saves in the second stanza.
St. John's outshot the Orange, 13-9, and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Red Storm defense held the conference's top scorer, sophomore forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) without a shot. Junior Guido Cristofori (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led Syracuse with four shots.
Aside from the BIG EAST implications, the match also was significant in the region. St. John's entered the game as the top-ranked team in the New York Region, while the Orangemen were ranked second.
Syracuse will play another New York Region match on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Hartwick. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Orangemen get back into BIG EAST play on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Notre Dame.
