PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) and freshman forward Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) have been named BIG EAST Men's Soccer co-Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their performances versus Rutgers and Seton Hall.
Syracuse (7-4-1, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) went 1-0-1 last week, defeating eighth-ranked Rutgers, 3-2 in overtime, and tying Seton Hall, 2-2.
It is the third time this season that Johnson has been named the league's best offensive player. He scored a goal and had an assist in SU's win at Rutgers and assisted on both of the Orangemen's goals versus Seton Hall.
Johnson leads the team and the BIG EAST in scoring with 11 goals and 29 points. He became the 12th Syracuse player to score 50 or more career points with his two assists against the Pirates. The sophomore has played in just 31 career games. Johnson has nine goals in conference competition, two goals shy of the conference record set by Michael Magarinos of Seton Hall in 1995. His 22 points in league play are also two shy of the BIG EAST record held by Georgetown's Eric Kvello in 1997.
For Park, it is the third time he has been honored as the conference rookie of the week. He tallied a goal and an assist at Rutgers and assisted on the game-tying goal versus Seton Hall.
Park leads the Orangemen, the BIG EAST and the country with 14 assists. That total is a Syracuse record for freshman and is only two short of the single-season record regardless of class set by Steve Morris in 1989. Park has also scored five goals this season. His 24 points are the third most ever by an SU freshman.
The Orangemen's next match will be on Friday, Oct. 26 when they travel to fourth-ranked St. John's. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
