SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women's soccer team was unable to hold off an opportunistic Villanova offense in a 2-1 loss at the Soccer Stadium Friday night.
The Wildcats scored on its first possession of the game when junior forward Quinn Sellers took a pass from Erica Stewart and beat a diving Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) at 1:45 for the 1-0 lead. Following the initial goal, the Orangewomen outshot Villanova, 9-3, and held a 9-2 corner kick advantage before intermission, but could not convert on any of their scoring opportunities.
SU senior co-captain Candy Reich (Pembroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) teamed up with sophomore Nina Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster) to tie the game at 1-1 at 57:06. With her back to the goal, Reich one-timed a pass from Scalzo at the top of the box past 'Nova keeper Janel Schillig for her fourth goal of the year. Graduate student Erin Parsons (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) also earned an assist on the play.
Despite continued pressure from the Syracuse offense, Villanova capitalized on its next offensive opportunity when sophomore Janessa Jeltema took a pass from Candice McDonald and beat a downed Myers for the game-winning goal at 75:19.
Villanova (11-4-3, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) entered the game with 10 shutouts, seven being credited to Schillig, who made three saves in the contest. SU (9-6-0, 2-3-0 BIG EAST) outshot the Wildcats 12-11 and held a 16-5 corner kick advantage in the game. Reich's goal moved her past assistant coach Jenna Szyluk (1996-99) into second place on the all-time goals scored list at Syracuse with 26.
The Orangewomen will play host to Virginia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Soccer Stadium. It will be the final BIG EAST Northeast Division game of the season for Syracuse.
