
Orangewomen Fall to UConn

The Orangewomen led 1-0 early on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Nina Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster) at 11:35 when she beat UConn keeper Erin Rice with a shot from outside the box.
The lead would not last long as the Huskies tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Jessica Gjertsen. Alexa Borisjuk would net the eventual game-winner at 33:24, giving UConn a 2-1 lead heading into intermission. Sarah Popper added an insurance goal at 65:53 for the 3-1 final.
SU freshman goalkeeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made six saves in the loss. Scalzo leads the team in scoring with 12 points and is tied for the team lead with five goals.
Both teams received three corner kicks, but the Huskies outshot SU, 17-6, in the game.
With the victory, UConn (8-3 overall, 5-0 BIG EAST Northeast Division), clinched a share of the division regular season title and improved its record against the Orange to 7-0 all-time. Syracuse (6-3, 2-2 BIG EAST NE Div.) will travel to St. John's to play the Red Storm in another divisional game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
