SU continually let the ball bounce on the artificial turf, something that played to St. John's advantage, said Syracuse head coach April Kater.
The only goal of the game came at 32:58 when Red Storm forward Erin Zambelli broke away from the defense to beat SU freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) one-on-one for the game-winner.
Myers made six saves in the loss and moved into fourth place on the all-time saves list with 50.
St. John's held Syracuse to a season-low seven shots and had a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks. The Red Storm improved to 5-0-1 in the all-time series with the Orange.
Syracuse fell to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast Division. The Red Storm improved to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast Division. SU will return to action on Friday, Oct. 12, as it plays host to Seton Hall at the Soccer Stadium in a non-divisional game. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
