
Orangewomen Lose Home Opener, 84-76, to #19/#18 Michigan

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse sophomore Shannon Perry (Providence, R.I./LaSalle) tied a career high with 19 points, but the Ornagewomen basketball team suffered an 84-76 loss to the #19/18 Michigan Wolverines in at Manley Field House on Sunday afternoon.
The loss was the first of the season for SU. The Orangewomen are now 3-1, while the Wolverines improved to 3-1.
Michigan closed out the first half with a 17-8 run for a 47-31 lead at intermission. Michigan was 10-of-10 from the charity stripe and shot 61.5 percent from the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point range in the opening half.
SU found its shot in the second half, going on a 14-5 run to come within 52-45 of the Wolverines with 14:39 remaining in the game. Sophomore guard Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central) converted on two three-point plays in the scoring stretch for the Orangewomen.
Michigan answered with two three-pointers by Alayne Ingram as Michigan led 65-53 with 9:27 remaining. Syracuse got as close as 67-60 with 8:09 left on consecutive threes by senior guard Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North).
Perry shot 8-of-11 from the field and added a team-high five assists. James tallied 18 points and McBride chipped in with 16 points. Ingram led all scorers with 25 points, shooting 5-of-7 from three-point range and 75 percent overall from the field. Sophomore center Chineze Nwagbo (Lanham-Seabrook Md./Duval) led all players with six rebounds.
Michigan shot 62 percent in the game, hitting 31 of 50 field goal attempts, including 8-of-12 from three-point range. The Orangewomen connected on 50 percent (31-62) of their field goal attempts.
Syracuse takes to the road for the next three games. The Orangewomen start the stretch away from home at Auburn on Thursday Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
