Women's Lacrosse Announces 2002 Captains

SYRACUSE, NY - Fran Amasia (Fallston, MD/Fallston), Erica Mathewson (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) were recently named captains of the 2002 women’s lacrosse team. The decision was made by a team vote held in October.
Amasia, a senior attacker, has recorded two goals and one assist in her career. A player with great work ethic and a good understanding of the game, Amasia leads by example.
Mathewson is a senior midfielder who scored 14 goals in the 2001 season and led the team with 36 groundballs. She had a career-high four goals against Duquesne and a personal-best two assists versus Virginia Tech.
Soults,a senior, was named third-team All-American and BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year last season after recording 42 points on 33 goals and nine assists. She tied a career-high with five goals against Maryland and tallied three scores in the NCAA Tournament game versus North Carolina. She is fourth in career points at SU with 85. Soults has also been named to the Divsion I Academic All-American team by the IWLCA and was a second team Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District I selection.
The Orangewomen return 20 players from last year’s 10-5 squad. SU finished second in the inaugural seson of the BIG EAST Conference and advanced to the NCAA Tournamen for the second straight year. Syracuse lost to sixth-seeded North Carolina in the first round, 14-9.
