Freeney and his SU teammates are preparing for the Insight.com Bowl to be played on Saturday, December 29 against Kansas State in Phoenix, AZ. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. EST.
There are 25 players on the 2001 consensus All-American, a 25-man NCAA Consensus All-America Football Team featuring 14 players on offense and 11 on defense. The players listed had the majority of votes competing against players at that position only. Four first-team votes were considered the minimum number required of the seven teams.
Freeney, the nation's leader in quarterback sacks, set NCAA, BIG EAST and Syracuse single-season records with 17.5 sacks in 2001. He led the conference in forced fumbles with eight and his 11 forced fumbles and recovered (eight forced, three recovered) is also an NCAA record.
The 6-1, 250-pound defensive end was honored by the conference as the BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
