
Second Eight Places Fifth At Eastern Sprints

Syracuse placed fifth in the second eight grand finals. The Orange finished the final in 5:50.6. The Orangemen's junior varsity eight made the grand final after finishing its heat in 5:45.5, less than a second behind the heat-winner, Princeton (5:44.9). Peter Romano (East Amherst, NY) was the coxswain and Andy Berster (Sarasota, FL) was the stroke, while Scott VandeVusse (Grosse Point, MI) rowed in the bow position.
Directed by coxswain Eric Miller (Syracuse, NY, Henninger HS), Syracuse's varsity eight placed fourth in the petite finals. Led by captains Josh Stratton (Hyde Park, NY) and Matt Heumann (Burnt Hills, NY), who rowed in seats six and five, respectively, SU's varsity eight placed fourth in its heat. The Orange's boat made the petite final after crossing the finish line in 5:46.3 in the heat.
Syracuse's third varsity made the grand final, finishing third in its heat with a time of 5:58.3. In the grand final the boat, steered by coxswain Abe Yoffe (Baltimore, MD) and stroke Matt O'Neill (Liverpool, NY, Liverpool HS), crossed the finish line in 6:05.7, finishing sixth.
The Orange's freshman eight boat finished fourth in its heat with a time of 5:58.0. In the petite final SU placed sixth (6:02.0). Matt Brocks (Hyde Park, NY) was the bow and Nicholas Alexander (Wilmette, IL) served as the stroke.
The Eastern Sprints is the championship of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges.
Syracuse races at home on Onondaga Lake this Saturday against Dartmouth for the Packard Trophy.
