"I can't express how proud I am of this team. As a coach they've been my dream team," SU's head rowing coach Kris Sanford said. "Of course we would have liked to have rowed a better race today, but I'm proud of the way my team competed. This type of history-making season is one that we will build on for next year and the year after."
The boat, coxswained by junior Heather DiLoreto (East Amherst, NY), finished in 7:19.56. Washington won the varsity eight race and the overall championship.
Junior Jillian Kott (McLean, VA) served as the stroke and senior Meredith Kyle (Rochester, NY) was in the bow seat for the Syracuse boat, which recorded the fastest varsity eight times in SU history this season. Senior captain Katie Modolo (St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada) and junior captain Libby Graves (Holden, MA), along with juniors Rachael Kirchhoff (Juneau, AK), Alicea Kochis (Naugatuck, CT), Helen Tanger (Amstelveen, The Netherlands) and Froukje Wegman (Haastrect, The Netherlands) fill out the Orange boat which started the season by defeating 21 teams en route to posting an 8-0 race record.
In 2001 the Orangewomen won the inaugural BIG EAST Rowing Challenge, the Orange Challenge Cup and the Orange Plus Cup.
