CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College Eagles netted three first half goals en route to a 5-1 victory versus the Syracuse men's soccer team in the season-opening game for both teams at the Newton Campus Soccer Field on Friday, Aug. 31.
Syracuse was able to get off 14 shots, but the lone tally of the game for the Orangemen came in the 53rd minute when sophomore forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) scored his first goal of the season. It was Johnson's 10th career goal after leading the team with nine as a rookie in 2000. Freshman Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) was credited with the assist for his first career point.
Boston College, the defending conference tournament champion, opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a goal by Adam Pfeifer. Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Casey Schmidt made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season in the 23rd minute. Bobby Thompson pushed the Eagles' advantage to 3-0 with an unassisted score with just over two minutes left in the half.
Johnson's goal cut the deficit to 3-1, but goals by Schmidt and Pfeifer in the last 10 minutes put the game out of reach for Syracuse. In addition to his two goals, Pfeifier also added an assist. Bill Arnault, a Cicero-North Syracuse graduate, had an assist in his first collegiate game.
Freshman goalkeeper David Rabazzi (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) suffered the loss for Syracuse in his collegiate debut. Rabazzi made three saves, while playing the first half. Classmate Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) took over in the second half, making two saves.
Danny Caruso was the winning goalkeeper for the Eagles. He also made five saves in 90 minutes of action.
Syracuse plays its first home contest of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 5 when it hosts Colgate. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
