Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) registered the second three-goal performance of her collegiate career to help the Princeton field hockey team to a 5-1 win against Syracuse Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. The five goals were the most scored against SU since a 5-0 loss to Penn State in 1999. The win moved the Tigers to 2-0 on the season, while Syracuse’s record dropped to 2-1.
Friebe's first goal came at the 29:27 mark of the first period to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Cory Picketts added to that advantage with her first goal of the season on a penalty corner with 5:25 left in the first half. Junior Kristen Skorupski and Claire Miller assisted on the score and Princeton led, 2-0, at halftime.
Friebe opened the second-half scoring when she collected the ball just inside the midfield line, dribbled through the SU defense and blasted a shot into the right side of the cage at 16:23. Her third goal came at 12:41 after junior Emily Townsend's initial shot on a penalty corner was blocked by SU junior goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus). The rebound came right back to Friebe, who drove it past the diving Syracuse netminder for a 4-0 lead.
Townsend scored Princeton's fifth and final goal of the day. Freshman Lizzie Black's initial shot on a penalty corner was saved but the rebound popped right back to Townsend, who was able to drive it home for a 5-0 lead.
Syracuse's Michelle Marks (Lititz, PA/Warwick) broke the Tigers' bid for a shutout with her goal at the 8:06 mark of the second half, but that was all the offense the Orangewomen could muster as they were outshot, 22-4.
Princeton goalie Kelly Baril finished with two saves, while Latsko posted seven stops.
The Orangewomen will play Northeastern tomorrow, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at Princeton's Class of 1952 Stadium.
